Run in the Great Midlands Fun Run

To say that I am not a runner is one of the world's biggest understatements. If you give me the choice between (a) cleaning the windows and (b) going for a run; despite the windows thing being about as unappealing as you can get, it would probably win out over the run.

I started to run a bit, though, at the beginning of last year in order to lose a pound or two - a bit further each day, until I built up my distance to about 5km at a time. I might not enjoy running, but it has the advantage of being both free to do, and is (literally) on the doorstep. I put my name down for the Great Midlands Fun Run as a motivator - got to keep it up or I would drop dead whilst trying to slog round 8.5 miles.

My big brother most certainly is a runner. He is a gym-every-morning-before-work kind of guy who would feels most miserable if he can't run - so after last year's run (after which I hung up my trainers with a great deal of pleasure), he asked if I was going to enter again this year, as he would also like to have a go.

I may have alluded to sibling rivalry previously, so when this gauntlet was thrown down, there was no going back. My training this year has been what you might charitably call patchy, until I got back from holiday at the beginning of last month and panicked - the four week intensive training schedule was on!

So in today's event, big brother beat his own target and come in after an impressive 1 hr 6 mins (he'll be in the top 300-400 finishers out of 7,000 in that time); and I came in about halfway down the field in 1 hr 40 mins.

    And after we finished...

I may not have broken any records, but I ran the whole course non stop, and have therefore completed my week 22 Challenge!

        • Well done Hazel! That really is a challenge I couldn't run any distance (can't run and breathe at the same time ) so I'm full of admiration for anyone who can complete one of these races
          Hope you've unwound by tomorrow

First week of June and we're rapidly approaching the half way point
What will you do this week, Grapes?

            • Which one's you Hazel!? Seriously, well done you. I don't run, in fact, I can barely manage a waddle nowadays - just not built right, see!

Anyway, that's why I'm here - late to the party, I know. First day today; supplements taken, full-fat Atkins brekky scoffed, and I'm about the get the tape-measure out

I will report the shrinking measurements every Monday morning. At the moment just picture a short fat hobbit-like creature (wide arris, big boobs, short body) but on long legs. Weird, but that's me - a bit like a lollypop shape, really. Not good.

              Off now to be active...

                  Cheeky mare!

I knew there was a reason that I sewed my name on my vest.

I'm with you when you say you aren't built right - you can just see 'runner' (or 'athlete') stamped across some people, can't you? That's like my brother, and all those people you see in the park jogging with their iphones on and posh 'breathable fabric' running tops.

I went around the course yesterday in the company of waddlers and shufflers; big bums and grim red faces; every single one of them looking like that this is the first time that they had put themselves through anything approaching a run since they were about 10 years old, and were hating every minute.

Then it struck me that I must look like that too. .

This was a very depressing thought, and it might even be enough to make me not hang up my trainers and say 'thank goodness that that is over with!'; but to try to transform my default attitude from 'HATE running!' to going for a 5k run at lunchtime three times a week is normal and satisfying and enjoyable. This will be a huge Challenge for me - I wonder if I can do it?

So what's your challenge, Geef - it can't just be 'lose weight' every week until the end of the year or else there will be nothing left of you in December! I challenge you to quantify amount to lose and timescale and put it down on here!!

                  • Running is bad for you, Hazel - kills yer knees!

I can't post my weight, as I don't have any scales. However, I'm around an 18 trouser and 18/20 top - and at 5'4 that's just, well, obscene, and on silly little size 5 feet, too! The slim legs is what's making me try; I figure if I had already gone past the point of no return, my legs would've filled out, too.

Cross-trainer, mucking-out, and dog walking for me most days. Plus a couple hours doing my Folks' garden this afternoon, and Pilates this evening. May even get on my bike of an evening the rest of the week. Kill or cure...

Yes, that's one thing that does concern me, but I've hardly been at it for a lifetime (for 18months, and that sporadically) so the knees should be up to snuff for a while yet!

You do loads of exercise already, so maybe you're right to look at what goes in the ol' cakehole. I'm uncomfortable about Atkins per se (all that protein/fat/cholesterol), but can quite understand about the amount of refined carbs we stick down our necks mucking about with our insulin production and therefore how our bodies deal with the food we eat.

Good luck with it - mistress VC will be hot on your tail if you don't keep up with your CHallenges, just ask Shen & Trip!
