  • Saturated Britain

Saw a very concerning map on the weather report a couple of nights ago on TV.

It showed that the ground over ENTIRE country is totally saturated. No air gaps in the soil and groundwater totally filling the ground.

This will make growing very difficult.

    We NEED a drought!

    Loving my allotment!

tsk, no we don't need a drought. It just means we won't have water companies panicking about supply levels although they will no doubt grumble if we fill the kettle for a coffee . It also means there's a fair probability that we won't have to water our veg for a long time in fact if ever again if we have a non summer like we had last year.

      Now. did someone mention coffee?

I would like a window of dry, that allows my little patch to dry out. Like the west coast, you'd think it was sinking. The whole foot of rain that fell, that's probably accurate given how deep the puddle is.

          milk and 2 sugars please

We usually get enough rain, we just need more reservoirs for storing it when it does rain, specially in the South - but there's always a terrible planning kerfuffle whenever they suggest a site for another one

And here we're fighting to keep a reservoir because developers want to fill it in and build houses on the land.

Yes, totally stupid! But its a Victorian storage reservoir inside the city boundaries and the land is worth more to the owners (an American company) as housing land than for water storage. The fight has been ongoing for years

To test ground water levels they install a 6" pipe deep into the ground so that when they remove the cap they can lower a measuring device into it to acurately measure the height of the water table below. The top of the pipe protrudes about 2 foot out off the ground to make the task easier.

T'was quite funny on the news the other night when the man removed said sealing cap and water poured out of the top of the pipe.

I read somewhere that they are now forecasting a bleak couple of months with snow and ice and then back to rain.

Apparently they have drained about 25% of the reservoir for surveying.

As some of you may have gathered there is a big developement going behind us.......loads of housing on a huge exfactory estate....... tThey have had to build to attenuation ponds for the one in a hundred years storm so the water will go into them and then be managed back into the drainage systems . Not quite finished yet , shame really cos I think we may have had the one in a hundred years storm

I quite agree but if the Welsh government push ahead with plans to build 45,000 new house around Cardiff the reservoir isnt going to be big enough to supply all of the houses.
