  • Mahonia arrived but snow on ground..

For the time being I've put it in the utility room - but should I stick it in the garage (cooler) or just go and plant it at some point even though there's snow on the ground?

if you can get it heeled in, it should be ok otherwise the garage should be ok. keep the roots covered to avoid freezing though

Mahonia is pretty hardy. Originally a Himalayan shrub, yours is a genus from North America where it can get pretty cold. Just put somewhere sheltered until your soil is not too wet. My mum's is in clay soil and hers flourishes in such conditions, although south facing. Mine are exposed on gravelly free draining soil and are gaining in growth.
      Are you pleased with it?
