Potty puts thick book down back of trousers, just in case.

I don't like James Wong, I think he spends to much time promoting himself and to little promoting gardening. He strikes me as a person who will say/do anything to make a bob or two.

That was my take on it when I saw him in action at a recent spud day.

I am saving up for her coffee table book on wildflowers. It will be a long time
Seen her new seeds collection? More than eight to a packet too

Now I'm glad I was too busy messing about at the seed swap bit when they announced he was about to be on.

Actually, there are very few people I would go out of my way to listen to/see in action on the gardening front. Certainly I end up shouting at the radio when GWT is on - although there is very good and helpful info there if you can get past the smugness.

There might be more than 8 to a packet, but they are expensive, the range has not got a great reputation for germination rates, and customer service a bit on the iffy side too.

Geoff Hamilton for me. Used to enjoy gardener's world with him.

Although was it Percy Thrower who used to do the Blue Peter garden (When I was very very young!)?
                  Yes, it was from 1974-1987.

                    It's a new range, isn't it?

I didn't go into the chat hall. This was a thirty second filming op buying a few seed potatoes and then I saw him flogging oca and doing a book signing at a table. Faithful followers were fawning. I head for HSL seed swap then buy spuds
I would guess we missed nothing much. I didn't miss your beautiful seed box though

Fair enough - hope these are an improvement.

John's book is still available through his family . I treated myself to a copy recently, it's still an interesting read and the idealism comes through. It is feels a little quaint, too which I like.

I don't have a TV so lots of these people pass me by. I watched the You-tube of exploding crysanthemums or whatever they were that was on a thread here recently and just thought "what is point?" Certainly wouldn't dare grow them for other people's children to try after seeing that!

PS OK just checked web site and "The New Complete Book of Self Sufficiency" is not there but I did buy it from David and Ann. I've checked mine and it's a Dorling Kinnersley book which includes both The original book of the same name and "The New Self Sufficient Gardener". Here's the Amazon link for anyone interested.

Never saw Valerie Singleton or John Noakes in a garden to the best of my memory!
