  • Garage/Outbuilding Help please

Our current garage is, frankly falling to pieces.

The previous owners 'made' it from large fence panels/sheets and planks of wood/old bricks etc (we bought the house 6yrs ago).

Last year, it started to leak from the roof and on inspection, we found it was irrepairable. The best we've been able to do is tack some plastic over the leaking bits. It's rotting and leaking and is horrible!

I know that the garage of my dreams is a long way away, money wise.

However, we really need something large, sturdy and robust and we need it fairly quickly (within a few months). We don't actually need a proper garage door - just a normal sized door (though double doors would be nice!)

I was thinking about buying a 2nd hand portacabin or shipping container and converting it (where it needs it - e.g. a window, or electric). That way it just be craned in and dropped where we need it....

Has anyone has any experience buying or converting these types of things? Or heard any horror stories about them!?

Not what you want for cars or metal spades etc.

A carport - no doors - is cheap and quick to erect..

      (Planning permission?)

I need something lockable that I can run power (plugs and lights to)...

Hadn't thought about the condensation thing though - with all our garden equipment and a freezer to put in there, as well as some of OH's large woodworking tools, a shipping container might not be the quick fix I was thinking of....

Don't need planning permission - as its not attached to the house and will fall with the permitted sizes, I can build without asking the Council

I have a concrete garage with a metal roof and had lots of trouble with condensation. We lined the roof with polystyrene sheets - the sort that are used in cavity walls. No problems since then! My freezer has been there for years and its fine

My next door neighbour has a metal shed purchased after he demolished his old wooden shed.

He has also had to line it like VC everything from tools to lawnmower was turning to rust.

Having said that if you are prepared to line it an old shipping container is about as secure as you can get.
