Because some people don't want to eat animals, rather than don't like the taste of animals.

I don't think quorn tastes anything like meat though, it absorbs the taste of what you are cooking so if it's cooked without meat flavourings it doesn't taste of meat at all.

I genuinely don't get why people eat meat. Why do you feel that you have to even ask the question? People who don't eat meat are constantly having to defend themselves. I'd say, stop being so genuinely puzzled, and just let people eat what they want. Simples.

I like meat but I try to eat stuff that have been humanly treated.

But I do try to have at least one meat free day a week & one day when I have fish.(not farmed)

Yes, originally I thought this would be the way forward because lots of people go down the low carb road, but I spoke to my doctor about it and he thinks that the benefits to eating no animal products would suit me better. So I'll give it 3 months and see what happens.

And to be honest, I haven't missed eating anything animal so far - it's still early days I know. I've discovered that I prefer Soya milk to cow's milk which is good.

Yeah, no. I never said that people shouldn't eat what they want or tried to persuade anyone to go and buy a chop. I merely questioned the need to make something that tastes and looks like meat. I can see that a sausage can be filled with anything, but something made to look and smell like bacon?? That's a puzzle... Not so simples....

            It really is simples.

Some people don't want to eat animals.

The issue is why are you questioning it in the first place. To be frank, it's none of anyone's business what people choose to eat. If you are going to question it, be prepared to be asked to keep your nose out.

It's true a lot of meat eaters feel that they have the right to ask us why we choose not to eat me. And will questions our motives and all the details about it. So you feel like you have to defend yourself.

Honestly I'd rather not eat sausages that taste like animal, but thats whats available in the shops. When I don't have time to make my own, I don't have that much choice. But if they have other flavours they are my preference. I think quorn is often targeted at meat eaters who want to cut back on their meat intake, but don't want to try anything too different from their normal meat and 2 veg type meals. It's also easy for people to buy if someone veggie is coming round and they don't know how to cook veggie food.

Sometimes meat eaters feel the same among zealous veggie friends................. As Zaz says it's up to each of us to decide, neither side appreciates being lectured/questioned

Exactly. I am genuinely puzzled why people think it's their place to ask.

Most veggies I know, wouldn't even bring the subject up and when they do, its usually to explain why they're not eating something. Of course there are some who judge others, but you get that with everything. I've seen it happen with other things but think it usually goes on for longer with veggie/veganism.

It depends on who, how and why you're asking somebody. If a friend of mine made significant changes to their diet I would ask why in the same way I'd ask if they changed their job, hair colour or partner. Its called taking an interest in the life of your mate. These conversations would be totally unacceptable if you didn't know the person and rather rude. I'd probably ask in more detail if I was catering so that I could produce something that fitted with the values of the individual. For example I have a friend who eats a primarily veggie diet at home where she can ensure she minimise food miles. She'd not want to eat things that had been flown round the world and would then be happier with a small amount of local and ethical meat. Others would disagree but its her choice. By discussing her diet with a friend I understand this and am happy to fit in. Not all people who question are been critical (some probably are), some are genuinely curious and in some cases may want to follow suit and are merely asking for advice.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I don't mind anyone asking me why I don't eat meat and I'll bore the hindlegs off them with my reply Equally, I feel entitled to ask them why they do eat meat. Free and open discussion - great - especially around a table, face to face - as sometimes the written word can be misinterpreted.

I think its the people who go into the whole "if you were stranded on a desert island" line of questioning that bugs me. Though actually one of those conversations caused me to pretty much give up eggs.

If you listened to all the "food scares" you would starve.

It wasn't anything to do with a food scare.

ETA But yes, if you listed to food scares you wouldn't eat anything and you probably wouldn't leave your house either.
