By Odins trousers I started something, my stars. Some people need to pick their dummies up. Dear me. Besides, we all know meat eaters live longer, look nicer and don't smell of sprouts... Oh no he didn't!!

If you can't cope with being told it's none of your business, then perhaps don't ask next time. Just concentrate on your own plate of food.

Relative to Petal's post regarding Vegans not keeping pets or eating Honey, as it is 'enslavement' of animals Where do they stand on eating fruits that are only produced thanks to insect pollination?

(No, I'm not trying to start anything - I'm genuinely curious.)

I think it can get to silly levels. Even film contains gelatine, so until everyting goes digital a vegan couldn't go to a cinema. I think most vegans draw a line somewhere.

I can't hold my tongue with our vegan relative who is full of contradictions. I couldn't give a stuff what people choose to eat or not eat but when they post vile images to my kids and force their opinions on you - boy do they get a reality check from me! I pointed out to said relative who snottily told us off for eating honey that as 50% of our crops are pollinated by bees perhaps she needs to start eating fresh air and stop being such a hypocrite. The only people I have ever blocked on facebook happen by coincidence to both be vegans - I found their extreme way of life worrying and obsessive- I didn't like them making me or my children feel uncomfortable about running a small holding and I found their posts to be misinformed and consistently incorrect - I couldn't understand why they couldn't get on with life - why did everything have to be so serious- you drank milk - you killed a baby calf la la la..... heres a picture of what you did...oh, get lost!
Anyway, back to the original post - I totally get being a dietary vegan for healthy reasons - or even cutting out milk dairy products-i admire anyone that has the time to look after themselves in such a way. Just be careful not to get sucked in by the so called 'ethical' reasons as its full of contradictions - not starting a fight anyone - just stating a fact.

The honey bee Apis mellifera, would be extinct in the uk if they were not kept by Beekeepers. It's generally excepted that no wild populations exist on these islands. Also, as a beekeeper I can tell any vegan, Vulcan or velociraptor that bees couldn't give two hoots about being kept in a hive. If they did they would go. True they take issue with the removal of honey and the weekly inspection inconveniences them a bit, but seeing as the wild flower population has been decimated by the use of herbicides for the growing of cereal crops to feed people we rarely harvest any. This means a hugely expensive hobby is undertaken purely to preserve a colony (species) from one year to next with very little reward. I'm sure that if bees were aware of what the few of us keeping bees today were doing for them they'd gladly give us honey for our troubles. You know. Instead of stinging me, er, us...

Petal, I'm now wondering if my Veggie-Vegan friend is actually your relative - there are a surprising amount of coincidences.

                    Interesting thread, nonetheless.

no , she is a moron who lets horses out of their fields as she believes they are imprisoned. She is self opinionated and deluded and is doing nothing whatsoever for the vegan cause- its people like her who convince people that giving up meat and dairy is not beneficial - they don't want to end up a 'crazy' like her!! its people like her who turn vegans/vegetarians into jokes. Such a shame.
Its a very interesting topic and I love to hear people opinions, including how to reduce meat/ dairy intake with interesting alternatives.

Eating meat would have to be made against the law to make me even think about stopping eating it.
Humans have always eaten meat that is how they evolved.
When lions & tigers go vegetarian so will I

I haven't read the whole thread - but we buy a sunflower spread (they also do a soya one too), for one of my daughters... no dairy, just pure sunflower or soya.

It's available in all supermarkets.. "Pure" I think is the brand.

I'm slowly but surely moving over to vegetable spread instead of butter in my baking (which I do a fair bit of) and am toying with trying egg substitute too. Has anyone tried this?
My brother in law is vegan - and my wife cooks with xanthan gum as an egg substitute (when baking cakes for him, etc)

What is it about not eating animal products that gets so many meat-eaters so worried? Lol!

erm, I don't see anyone worried here, I see an interesting discussion going on with several observations about how to find replacements for meat/dairy and honest opinions from those who are brave enough to say - hey hang on a minute - stop using plastics, oil etc if you truly care about animals- the production of plastics account for many more animal casualties amongst (rare, sometimes...) animals than those scary 'meat eaters' of erm bred cows/pigs etc cause!!!!
Am I alone in understanding the hypocrisy of mankind?
However I am all for a mass reduction in meat/dairy- for dietary reasons.
