Discrimination on the grounds of Gender

Our local Council allows a 50% discount to women aged 60 or over and to men aged 65 or over. My pal, big Davey, (he is a really big fella) is aged 62, same age as me and he recent pointed out that the Council cannot discriminate in this fashion, asked to be charged at the same rate as women and asked for a refund for the last two years.

Councils response.

No refunds. No reduction this year. We will be "Implementing a Revision of Charging Policy for 2013-14".

My pal has told the Council this is not acceptable.

I don't think it's fair to discriminate on age either.

Steve, That is exactly why I didn't bring it to the fore myself. I'm 62 in a few days and I am similarily affected, or would have been if I wasn't involved in the Court Case.

Me too - they won't be making any reductions - they'll only increase the cost.

It's unlikely there will be many men between the ages of 60 and 65 affected by this.

On the positive side for me, I can use the Council's attitude in this matter to advantage in my Court case. They have consistently operated outwith what is permitted by the law and this is another example.

VVG, I think at the appropriate time, the elected members of the Council will be reminded of the effects such an assault on the fairer sex will impact on the ballot box. It is they who will get strung up.

I wouldn't worry about it - women live longer so overall we'll be paying more in the long run.

On a serious note though - I would like to complain. My age is discriminatory. I certainly don't feel or, I hope, look 46 and therefore, I would like my age to be lowered. I'm sure this must be a civil liberty. Or even just a liberty.....

This sort of thing goes on all the time.
Try getting a job if you are over 50/55 or even 45.
Before taking pension credits four years ago I had been unemployed for three and a half years.
In that time I applied for well over 200 jobs, replies about ten, interviews two,chances of a job minus ten.
When will the joke shop(job centre)realise this and stop putting so much pressure on older people to get work.

P.S. Taking pension credits was about the best thing I have done in recent years.

There are precious few lady pensioners under 65 nowadays - with the way the National pension age has been rising lately we've all had to take pensions at a later date.

I just scraped in by the skin of my teeth to get my pension at 60 - although I took my private pension and early retirement at 54
