I disagree, I think 'I don't want to' is a good enough reason. I don't eat game, or pork, or horses and I think 'because I don't want to' is a good enough reason for that.

        • Its the tip of this particular iceberg - but there have been lots of other icebergs and there'll be lots more out there waiting to drift our way. I know I've said it before but wherever there is a loophole in a system someone will find it and exploit it.
We've had olive oil, wine, powdered milk........nothing is sacred. Remember the chicken injected with water to make it look more succulent and weigh more......Non-organic food being sold at a premium by labelling it organic.
Believe nothing is what it seems unless you've grown or reared it yourself. Sad but true.

            Oh lord, no.

Whilst all this is going on......what are the sneaky politicians putting through Parliament? The Secret Justice where you can be tried, unrepresented, in secret, and nothing is known by anyone. It's supposed to be restricted to terrorists and the like....yeah, right.

            • This one isn't fully out in the open yet matey. What's really worrying is that it is normal. Perverts and weirdo's everywhere, Rip off Britain perpetuated by the banks which swallowed up the Mutual Building Societies, and Supermarkets squeezing out the small fella from all sectors, not just groceries and then land this load of carp on us. Just another day at the office innit.

              • Point to ponder. Tesco sells it's value rice pudding at 12p per can compared to 94p for Ambrosia. What does a rehydrated maggot look like?

I'm a veggie and I agree with you. I just think anything we kill to eat/use should have been humanely raised and killed. Which would probably never lead to cheap meat.

It's either that, or rice pudding can be made very, very, cheaply and Ambrosia are ripping you off! Maggots are probably more expensive than rice!

But how can you make an informed choice if food labels cannot be trusted........even cooking from scratch is a minefield, unless you can personally source every ingredient or produce it yourself.

On the serious side, I remember a novel called King Rat or similar about prisoners of war in the east. Supposed to be based on a true story I think and the storyline included a plot whereby the prisoners bred rats and sold the flesh to the japanese guards on the pretext it was something else. Hey Ho, I'm spreading the problem worldwide now. <whistles>

Yes, see what you mean but the point I was trying to make is that people are getting very worked up about the fact that there is horse meat in their food but seem to be ignoring the fact that there is pork which seems to be based purely on the fact that in the UK far more people eat pig products on a regular basis than eat horse. Both are unacceptable if they're not meant to be there and as I think I've said about 3 times now the fact that so many people avoid pork for deep ingrained religious reasons is a damned good reason for this to actually matter more.

I agree wholeheartedly about the fact that any meat we eat should be ethically produced and took the decision some years ago to spend the same amount of money I had been spending on rubbish on quality meat and just eat a heck of a lot less of it.

                              • All this does of course have a tangent.....On the return flight from Madeira (squeezijet) I was peckish & so brought a turkey salad sandwich from the trolley,it was a very well traveled sandwich having been produced in ..... Switzerland that is a heck of a carbon foot print for a butty
