Have you triesd the line test, i think you can test the line as well as distance from the exchange!?
you do have to confirm that you have been asked to do it by an engineer, and you need to use a touch tone phone.

It seems the telephone line is at fault. If the line outside isn't buried, look to see if perhaps a rodent was chewing on it. I'm out of ideas for now. Good Luck with your hiccup!

Its an overhead line, Dusty, - squirrels walk it sometimes! Don't forget to check back tomorrow for a progress report

i had problems a while ago, we lost both phone and broadband, the BT guy said it was a fault at the exchange (which is just at the end of our road) but whilst he was here he swapped our 'box thing' said it was too old and had to be changed. He got me to do the line test.

Looking at your piccie again, when I took the front off mine there were lots of wires in the cavity to the left. Lots of skinny little wires. So many it was difficult to stuff them all back in again
No worries there VC just a couple of accurate observations, will post a pic later in the year when the room has been decorated.

Each of the little wires will be a phone extension socket,I used a different system,a single wire from the master socket to a BT distribution box then a small wire from that to each extension socket

Oh well was worth a try.

Hopefully the faults outside your boundary, its def. free then.
If its on your property i think it just depends on what the engineers like when they come - when i first moved in here we were told by BT there is no line active to this property, it would cost something like £125 to connect up, when the engineer arrived he did it in 10 mins, it was all here just not connected, there was no charge, think they just try to cover themselves.

Have you got hot choc? I've been down the pub, so excuse me if I've missed a bit here - did you find the master socket per the BB (dusty) pic?

Sorry no hot choc, Hazel. Did you want one after the pub
Followed your instructions and BB's - no joy. This morning I've dusted my socket just in case!! Its in the bedroom so I've had to make the bed too
Nothing obvious wrong outside. The wire comes from the pole across the road and comes in at the highest part of the gable and I'm not sure what happens after that. I think it runs through the attic but there is no way anyone could trace it up there. then it emerges in the back bedroom at a newish master socket put in by BT about a year ago.
Still waiting to hear from them. The good news is - no International calls today

Could well be a wire has been disturbed in a roadside cabinet when an engineer has been working on another line, that would be my guess.

It's no help, but a few years ago I found out I could have broadband without paying a line rental. So the place I was renting had phone sockets but wasn't paying line rental. As I had a mobile I didn't need a land line, but I could still set up broadband. If you plugged in the phone it wouldn't dial out.

Have you asked any neighbours if their phones are working?
