Green deal not so green

I've been working for a OAP fitting a new bathroom.
whilst working up stairs she opened the door to a salesman selling
New energy efficient boiler via the green deal scheme

The salesman man was asking about the existing
boiler fitted in her house she didn't know much about it
And he invited himself in to look at the boiler.

He told her because its over five years old see needed a new one
and continued to hard sell her a new boiler on the green deal scheme

It was at this point I came down stairs and joined in the conversation
I pointed out that the boiler was an A energy efficient boiler
and replacing it with another A rated boiler was not very green.

He made his excuses and left.

The only person who would benefit from this would be the contractor
and I'm sure he would have submitted false details about
The boiler he was replacing (lower energy efficiency rating)
In order to get his fee

I've also had a salesman offering me cavity wall insulation for
Free on the green deal
We live in a house with solid wall?
He said his firm has developed a new system which allows
Them to inject solid walls with insulation.
Injecting insulation into a rubble filled wall will do very little to
improve energy efficiency rates on the property !
The company was ltd address po box mobile phone numbers !


I've also had a salesman trying to sell me new plastic windows
With an A+ rating with a grant on the green deal.

He said that they are not on the fensa system and need replacing !

Having been from a building industry background before I became a teacher, I still totally resent the bad name it gets proper reliable tradesmen

The sales person would have said that about the boiler but it'd have not been approved to be replaced under the green deal scheme- the rules for it are quite tight- a company acting on the green deal scheme wouldn't have got any payment/carbon "points" to trade if the improvement in whatever measure was small (I.e. the benefit of replacing an a rated boiler wouldn't have been enough to get it approved). Besides I think they need to be cat d rated anyway?

No, I'm not a sales person or a green deal chap - I'm writing a system to 'do' these sort of green deal bookings/measures/rule implementation.

His injecting solid walls is rubbish as you say- they either insulate the outside depending on the material and repaint or board inside.

Better off taking a loan out anyway, the green deal loan isn't that great currently. (Obviously it you plan to stay in the property long enough to reap the rewards of having any work done )

Ev@r@est did a leaflet drop and door knocking operation in our street recently. I was talking to a friend in his car just outside our driveway when one of themheaded towards our door. I said to him. don't bother, not interested. He said, I'll leave the leaflet anyway. I said you won't. I wouldn't deal with you lot if you were the last company on this earth. I let him lnow his company copmpletely ignores the fact we are registered with both the telephone and mailing preferenceservices yet I still get junkmail and pest calls from them. I was maybe having yet another Grumpy Auld git episode but bu@@er it, enough is enough.

Report them to TPA.

It means they will be fined. If they receive several complaints, it means they will lose their telephone operating licence, which are required by ofcom for any company making cold calls with over a set number of employees.

I'm sorry to say this is whats ahead of us all as we get older. Unscrupulous conmen calling to our doors, trying to convince us that we need to replace/update what we already have for pure financial gain.
We had this last year when a guy who was replacing one of our rads did his best to convince us to replace our water tank. It was perfectly fine and we knew he only wanted it because it was copper.

I was approached to join the green deal scheme blew it out straight away, its a lot like the last scheme where you could claim back £400 if you replaced certain old boiler's with a new Band A boiler.

I played that scheme straight and replaced 14 boilers during the time scale but there where many who abused the scheme. The chap doing the install filled in the application form as to what the existing boiler was and as far as I know no checks were ever carried out by the authorities as to whether the information supplied was correct or not.

we have a really crappy old back boiler in the house we bought 15 months ago. we missed the boiler "scrappage" deal and I looked at this "green deal" but it looks to me to just be a long term loan you pay back through your gas bill and not any kind of good "deal". We definitely want to get a new boiler, but this doesn't seem to make financial sense to me. I am open to being corrected if I've got it wrong...

Colin you've hit the nail on the head

The green deal is self regulating by the company's who use the scheme and all the work is self certificated



I'm sure the salesman would have submitted false details to get the maximum fee
And the plumber would have got an A rated second hand boiler!

I've just had my neighbour landlord phone me up he's been offered loft insulation
on the green deal.

He has about 18in the of loft insulation already and it's also stuffed into the eaves as it is.
The contractor wants to put even more in which will have very little effect other than reducing the air flow in the roof space even more.
The condensation is quite bad already and this will make it even worse leading to more problems

If the government should start at the other end point of sale

Everything you buy now has an LED on it now
My broadband has four LED'S 0.5Watts each x 4 =2watts x millions of customers = alot wasted power.
the total combined electric bill per year is around 45million pounds(2011) for everyone to keep bt broadband on .
Increasing consumption equals more revenue for the government
They should be jumping on the manufacturers not the consumers.

I've got a couple of friends who've signed up to the Everlasting Boiler scheme, that looked like a good deal when it first started; you get an A rated boiler and ongoing maintenance (or replacement) for £4.80 a week, no upfront costs at all. But I think the price has just doubled now that the ' introductory offer' is over. As you're tied into it for 10 years or so, it doesn't seem like such a bargain!

I have just had a look at the Everlasting Boiler scheme by a Shade Greener.

Some pointers for grapes who might be thinking along these lines.

You are tied into to the scheme for 14 years. Your total payment should they not increase the price would be£6213-00p.

They advertise a hand made boiler, yeah right I can just see the tinsmith hammering out the outer panels as I type.

There are no 'terms & conditions' on their web site.

From looking at the pics on their site I think I can identify the boiler manufacturer and if I am right it is in my opinion one of the worst boilers out there.

Buyer beware.
