My husband didn't like moving but the carrot of 2 garages and a workshop was too much for him to resist. What does your husband really want from a home that he won't have if you buy somewhere nearby but pokey?

Really you said that both of you would hate being in a tiny place and overlooked, so like VC said go the carrot.
I quite like change, but when we were moving down here, the kids hadn't really lived anywhere except within a 3 mile radius. So I did the sneaky carrot.
When they would ask to ride their bike to school, I'd say :No, we live on a main road, if we didn't live on the main road you could. So in their little heads they started to wish they lived somewhere else. We used to look around at the parks and the properties locally here when we came on holidays.
For those who don't like the newness of change, if they see the place often enough, they start to feel like it's not new to them really. So take your OH for lots of drives eastAnd tell him you'll let him ride his bike to work!

Buy the house and tell him he is moving
I was working away from home for two and a half years before we moved here. We have moved to just about the most expensive place in Scotland, but I work here, so needed to get my family back together again.
Wherever you move to, you both need to be happy with it and if one or both compromise, you will regret itQuanti canicula ille in fenestra ?

I would say that living in a flat can be tricky ( i live in one myself!) You are at the mercy of your neighbours and after 10 years I have only just got dome decent people living above me.
The past three have had toddlers and they thought it was pefectly reasonable to let there little darlings rub about 8 hours a day ..... nightmare. I've had a guy who used to regularly threaten his girlfriend late at night and a woman who never took her high heels off.
The moral .... just don't do it!
Good luck with whatever you decide.Gill

It's a good time to buy, if you have the deposit.
It's not for ever: you can move any time, and rent it out. Rather than thinking "flat or terrace", I'd be thinking

We faced this problem when buying our first house. Our childhood homes were in prime London commuter belt and never could have afforded anything. We had one set of cycling friends in Sussex and had got to know the area through visiting and realised we could afford to buy a flat or small house. So we bought an hour from our families whilst still being commutable for jobs. As time went on we both ended up moving jobs and both work locally. Been here over 20 years and never regretted it.
Now the village is threatened with major development we're thinking it could be time to move again.
Good luck with your decisions. How about a weekend away in your proposed new location?

You are happy renting where you are?
Take twosheds advice on location when you buy and before long your incoming rent will outstrip your outgoing rent........provided you are not renting in axbettervlocation than you buy......opposite will apply. Rent at outset being equal.....

There is absolutely no point in moving voluntarily to a dwelling/location knowing in advance that you are definitely going to be miserable there for whatever reason,so forget that option.
Of the remaining I would say the best would be to move to a location/dwelling that is currently affordable & within a sensible driving distance of those people with whom you want/need to stay in regular physical contact. He who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame

Definitely not happy here - wouldn't buy it if we could afford it, as the location is pants! We only moved here, as we had to get out of where we were due to it being demolished and the site sold for development. It was the only place that we could come to with pets, and where I go my Dog goes. End of.All the best - Glutton 4 Punishment

Fraid I can't be of much use G4 as house buying doesn't agree with me, bought 2 & gave them both away. I would however like to wish you luck & hope you find a home & not just a house.sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”
