  • Where would you choose to live?

I've been working from home for a while now, and my wife may soon be required to work shifted hours which she does not want to do (quality of life is more important than money!).

If my wife quits in the next few weeks, we would have no ties to the Cambridge area. Her family are mostly from Kent; she was born in Suffolk and her parents are currently in Essex. So naturally we'd prefer to not move too far from family ties without good reason.

Since her work is in healthcare, there are potentially many other places where she could find a similar job, or, alternatively, she might consider a new direction - perhaps even call it a day and drop out of the workforce.

So if you were free to "up and leave", and buy a good but not extravagant property in most areas (say equivalent to a 4bed detatched suburban house/bungalow), where in Britain would you move to - and why?

I'm a west of the UK person and I need to be near water and mountains. So it would be the coastal strip, either South West England or West Wales - but, because its my homeland, Wales would be my choice. In other words, the opposite side of the UK to where you are (nothing personal FB)

Apart from moving back to Kent [or New York] - I am in the place I want to be and would not want to move anywhere.

If I could move my house beside a nice little beach that would be my ideal little heaven.

Wales, Snowdonia, on a south-facing slope somewhere. And your 4-bed detached house in the south of England would get you a decent amount of land in Wales too. And of course it contains people as lovely as VC, Mikey, chris, marchogaeth, ladylottie...

Well I'm not British but I'll play along. My absolute ideal place to live would be a fairly small island (about 40 or 50 square miles) where mine was the only house on it and nobody else was allowed anywhere near it. Lots of room to plant and grow what ever I want in perfect peace and quiet.

If we're talking mainland though I'd pick Cornwall, I'd be near the lost gardens of Heligan, the Eden project. There are some national parks not a million miles away from there too.

Up a long drive, with no ruddy neighbours. Lots of space, and decent internet connection!

Kent is the place for fruit isn't it FB and you could leave that Cambs. soil behind that you love so much. It's here still for me as it's central station but I'd buy out my neighbours, then pull their houses down and the castle would be mine complete with that old orchard...all of that aside, as it's not what you asked, probably Cornwall for me. The rest is too cold and I'm getting older
