I was just thinking that ferrules were/are the little plastic thingies that stop laces from fraying

well, that isn't wrong but there are many different types of ferrule. Before this thread, I thought of them only as the brass rings fixed around the handles of trowels , chisels etc to stop them splitting

But they are not just to stop the wood splitting but for safety and as silencers when tap-tapping your way around.
