          well, that isn't wrong but there are many different types of ferrule. Before this thread, I thought of them only as the brass rings fixed around the handles of trowels , chisels etc to stop them splitting

                          Whatever they're called they were left in place and the light has been plugged in and switched on without anything untoward happening!
