Yes, please, that sounds good, very simple. Thank you

Yeag, but ... my phone memory is full and I can't put anything else on it. I've taken OFF everything that I can. Still no room

That's a relief then, I just thought I was being dim when I couldn't do it. It seems to me it should be a basic easy thing to be able to do

Almost: I just had to take a day off from it. I've turned the phone off and ignored it. That seems to work, I might just do that every day! No stress!

The Backed up contacts will be named something like 001.vfc

You don't need the Android Developers kit to root your phone. It's only for advanced users and developers.

Best programme I've used for rooting an Android phone is SuperOneClick. All you have to do is download the programme, Go into settings on your phone and then application settings, then development and check the USB debugging box. Plug your phone into your PC, Run superoneclick and click on Root and it does the rest.

That would help me visualise what it is (very frackin clever?)

Thanks for your help B, I've bookmarked that last link and will have a go after school

How long does it take, usually? 'cos I did all that and nothing's happening. After clicking on Root, I got 3 things:

              - superuser.apk
              - su-v1
              - su-v2

and a click box above them that says "extract all files?"

My phone says USB is connected, do I want to copy files between computer and SC card?

                    oh what a pain. Sorry

I'm going up to bed in a minute (severe back pain forces me to become horizontal by 8pm most nights)
so I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks again

[TUT] How to force install apps to SD card without ROOT!!! - Android Forums

Thats what I followed TS, It worked 100%, and was all safe, sound and secure.

I didnt want to root my Galaxy ace for a couple of reasons... Firstly when I got the phone it came with a two yr warranty (im guessing if I mess it up whilst rooting and have to send it off etc they wont cover my stupidity - I'm not great with technology!)
Also the Galaxy ace I have is not a new model, and being on '3' you cant upgrade the version of Android (it has an outdated version) without rooting - if you look through that forum, and a few others, some people who had the same model as me have reported that after rooting and/or using custom ROM's they are not able to use the camera for example, others not being able to use wi-fi, something I beleive to do with the hardware not being compatible with up to date software (thats how I read it anyway).

Although I have had my Galaxy ace for a few months, it is an old model - hence £13 per month with 5000 mins, 500 texts, 5000 3to3 mins and unlimited internet.

As well as the above I didnt feel competent enough to root.

The above link, as mentioned will allow apps to be auto saved to the SD card, not all apps can be - google maps for instance, as well as any apps that were also 'pre installed' when I got the phone - some games etc etc. The vast majority of apps can then go onto the card saving alot of memory on the phone.

You just unroot it, before sending it off

now that is a worry, I use the camera every day, virtually, and the radio

Well, I now know what "clear data" means !

I was trying to sync my mobile & desktop calendars, but it wasn't working (the PC has an out of date copy, it's not updating as I enter new appts in the mobile).

I went thru the whole checklist of "help" suggestions, and nothing worked (probably because of not enough memory on the phone).
The last suggestion was "clear data".

It's not kidding: I went to bed with NO calendar. I had 4 years worth of important appointments in it. I could cry, I really could. I am so dam cross, and I hardly slept last night, was up at 5
