  • Has anyone rooted .... their phone?

    Have you?

    Did it go well?

    Did it "brick" ?

I have spent all afternoon ploughing through unintelligible techie jargon, trying to un-jam my phone, which is not accepting texts or apps, because the "internal memory is full". Except it isn't: there's hardly anything on it, no stored texts, only a dozen apps, no games, no videos, no nuffin.

    I am very, very narked.

I have a chum with a Sammy Galaxy bla bla that does this occasionally. She was told to clear the memory, and lost lots of pictures she hadn't been able to save to her computer, as it, too, had died. She then discovered it still had the same problem, as it did it again about a week later. Eventually, she got cross enough that she went back to the shop and demanded that they fix or replace it. I don't remember which they did, but she doesn't have that problem any longer.

My tablet did that too, I was going to try rooting it, but there wasn't that much on it, so I just factory reset it and didn't bother installing the browser/apps i had previously.

Have you got an SD card in there too or not?

I don't think the reset will help much, because the stuff taking up the room is "stock", which comes with the phone whether I want it or not.

Yes, have SD card, but nothing will store on it except my photos and a couple of apps (not enough to make any difference to the internal memory, which is the problem)

What I meant was; I think it's a 'take-it-back-and-whinge-loudly' kind of a problem, as opposed to a 'do-it-yourself-and-chuff-it-up' kind of fix.

Yeah, but last time I took it back, it got less fixed that I started with. (the radio wouldn't work. The techies didn't know why, and they changed the handset twice. In the end, all I had to do was turn it off, turn it on, the classic fix )

            Plus, I'm snowed in.

Texts are coming in from OH, who is snowed in too, but 30 miles away. Well, the texts aren't coming in, my phone is bouncing them, unread ):

The factory reset wiped the internal memory clean again, so it stopped saying it was full. I still have the stuff that was originally in there, plus the kindle app but i did archive the books first.
It now shows up as a second tablet on the kindle app, which means the first one effectively disappeared.
I have room for an SD card, but didn't bother putting one in to start with, don't think I'll bother now either as it seems that you can't wipe the cache clean without rooting it or resetting it no matter how much extra membory you add.

That would only be a temporary fix though, because in six months' time I'll have the same problem again, whereas if I "root" I can gain permanent extra memory, by deleting all the guff the phone comes with

I read something about putting an extension on the SD card, which gives you the extra memory. Or something. My brain is fried. Why are these things so complicated?

Because if it wasn't arcane you couldn't have a spotty 20 year old patronising you, and then where would their ego go?

You don't say what phone you have TS, I'm not brave enough to try this kind of jailbreaking. I wondered if this may be of help as you say you have read lots on the subject.

Your call TS, it's a risk vs knowhow/rewards thing for me, personally I wouldn't recommend it, however that said I've rooted/homebrewed other devices in the past as it suited me with what I was trying to accomplish. It would seem to me that the chance of freeing up more memory seems to revolve around the chance to move app's to the card hence freeing up memory on your phone... if you've not got much to move the benefit's will be very minor. Certain app's do not seem to work off the card....

                              Either way, good luck

PS - ask Feral what the connotations are with rooting from an Aus perspective... O.O
