  • Community Spirit

    Hi all,

I am quite new to this forum and to having an allotment. I really enjoy reading the posts and for me it kind of reflects the community spirit at my allotment.

A couple of years ago my family moved from Cornwall to Devon and it was a bit insular at first, as its difficult for us to get out and socialise without a ready supply of babysitters.

Since having our plot we have all formed some great new friendships, which is great for us and the kids. My friend has taken me out sea fishing a couple of times and lots of us get together in the evenings for a BBQ with beautiful fresh fish.

There has been lots of plant swops and skill sharing, or just a bit of help is always available such as watering if you are away etc.

My kids have also adopted another plot holders dog, which they love to bits as ours died a couple of years ago and we are reluctant to take on another as my partner and I both work.

There is a lot of children that come up to the plot and they were helped out to build a tree house. The children are up there all day busily hammering away.

As we don't have a garden at home its so good for all of us to have some outside space to chill out at the end of the day, with good company.

I was wondering if you have similar experiences at your plots and if this forum reflects the community on your allotments.

Take care all and by the way its raining (at last!!!)

Sounds fantastic Splinter, my children would love your site. When they wanted to climb a tree on my plot they were told they were not allowed to by the steward. they would love a tree house. Everone is friendly but not like at your allotment.

And I'm growing in my garden, so ploughing a lone furrow so to speak. However, we live in a small village with lots of people interested in growing their own veg so there is still a community spirit and people swap seedlings etc.
Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Hi I'm glad you have found some new friends.

We also live in a village and have smallish children, the allotments were very quiet just a few old timers and us 4/5 years back. We were worried that the land would be sold for development. Things much busier this year- 14 families now! only one small plot left. Me and lottie manager have 2 each(wife not too pleased about it!- but i want a small vinyard and fruit garden) 2/3 of them have small children. many of them play on the headland together. They don't have sheds though and i cant see them allowing a treehouse.

We normally help each other out and I am looking forward to building a vibrant community there. I gave a chat on veg growing to our village garden club last month and more than 30 people came up to the lottie.
