  • How Green am I? or You

Ok just had the double glazing finished,
The new boiler was installed at Christmas,
All my bulbs are energy saving,
my loft is insulated and boarded over the insulation,
and earleir in the year I ran the extract from the Tumble Dryer out throught the wall into the greenhouse and used it to heat instead of using my Parifin heaters.

      Hi

I guess that is the question “how green I am.” That would depend upon who you ask, if you compared yourself against the average UK resident 100 years ago, they had very little so waste, and air flight was uncommon.
How green do we need to be? Is it a small problem, or is the end of the world nigh?
I think we have a very big problem and we have caused it, so we need to lead the way.

I have lived in a rented house for the last 4 years, no double-glazing, and very little insulation.
But then again I earn very little and I have not been on an aeroplane for about 10 years and my annual mileage is less than 5,000 miles.
Anyone who spends £20,000 per year is likely to have a larger carbon footprint than someone spending £10,000 per year.

          Hi

Ive been very green with my washing today, got the plant based Ecover liquid, set washer to 30 degrees.
Then set it going without putting the liquid in

I'm not convinced about this 30 degree lark...I end up having to do two washes cos the first one doesn't get the compost stains out!

              Hi

Most of the washing is just in there because I have worn it for a day, mostly not very dirty.
And with being green it is about priorities, if you believe global warming is a major threat to mankind. Then you will try 30 degrees and then if some of your things are not clean, does it matter? can you just use a spray on one item? maybe a "proper" wash once a month?
I use a plant based washing powder, I am not saying it does not get my things clean, but I would not expect it to be as good, compared to the leading powder.

30 degrees with ecover is fine as long as you have
                (a) separate gardening clothes and
                (b) nothing truly white.

well apart from the dress OH made me buy for the wedding and new work clothes,(1 suit per year) I hav'nt bought anything new to wear for 7 years, I wash on 30, everything, use plant based stuff and use used water on garden, cant say everything is spotless, the older work stuff has "clean stains" and if i get wine or billberryjuice on anything i just soak before hand. we smell nice but mostley look scruffy. but dont care about keeping up with the jones so thats fine must admit i need new underwear but to replace the stuff I've got to the same quality would be £200 plus, so started saving, if you buy good stuff first time round it lasts, and there is charity shops for everything else.
also we have 4 bins in our building site of a kitchen, which makes the place look even worse, but at least we know we're trying, we spent some time in australia a couple of years ago, so offsetting by being skint! does that count?
nothing is left on standby, and all bulbs are eco friendly, as for eco toilet cleaner, i have never used one better!

I always understood that proteins don't break down much below 40 oC and so 'smelly' stuff doesn't get washed out below that temp???

By the way MRSA is not killed at 30 degrees in the washing machine, obviously not applicable to most of you out there but if you do have relatives in hospital or being treated at home with wounds it is good to know.

Mr OWG's work shirts are definitely NOT clean or white at 30 degrees....

The "white" wash is, I think, the only wash I do at a high temperature
