      Hi

      [QUOTE][Tumble Dryer?????

      Well spotted, I missed that.
And I think the other posts about 30 degrees are again about priorities, but I would add that most natural things (sweat and germs) would be diluted by 10,000+ so would cause no problems.

And with being green it is about priorities, if you believe global warming is a major threat to mankind. Then you will try 30 degrees and then if some of your things are not clean, does it matter? can you just use a spray on one item? maybe a "proper" wash once a month?
I use a plant based washing powder, I am not saying it does not get my things clean, but I would not expect it to be as good, compared to the leading powder.

          Hi Tigerella,

If the clothes are not dirty why wash them?

          Hope that does'nt sound offensive.

P.S. I don't think I smell that bad, or maybe people are being polite????

As has been said 'being green' really depends on how UNgreen you were in the first place!

I live in a crappy rented house with single glazing that costs a fortune to heat (but we use the heating as minimally as possible, definitely not all day every day like some!). I've never had a car, and neither did my parents... I've got to the grand old age of 24 using public transport... I don't take holidays as I can't currently afford it, so no flights... I'm vegetarian so far less of an eco footprint from raising animals... we don't have a tumble drier, and usually use eco washballs (apart from the pale blue workshirts, which get filthy).

They are not dirty, but they might smell after being worn for a day, especialy in summer.

Fair point we use one twice a year- Teggy won't turn it on. but NOG said that it was heating greenhouse that is surely in winter not now...I think it is quite a slick idea but isn't the heat damp and spasmodic(especially here) I assume it is ecomomy 7 for night time heating? I'd need a 10 meter pipe anyway

Never had a dryer myself I think they are a little too expensive to run.
If it aint dry wear something else.

like everything else it all boils down to common sense and practicalities, a dryer is essential for the OH during wet weekends (she works away Monday to Friday), our washing m/c hasnt got a 30 degree setting but after gales and high winds we scour the lanes for fallen branches for the wood stove, it doing what you can with the resources available. The problem as I see it is that its such an emotional subject thats compunded by the hype that surrounds it, my philopshy is that okay, it may or may not be causing global warming but the point is shouldn't we be trying to husband the resources regardless.

tbh 30 degrees washing does not work for us. results are pretty poor; whether that's the way i'm doing it I dont know. I work from home so happy to waft round in shades of grey. Kids and OH need to be whiter than white though.

we make up for it in other areas. altogether i'm happy with what we're doing as a family. but there's always that 'could do better' feeling. one step at a time eh?

If global warming concerns become mainstream, then things like off white cloths will be very common.

hmm. they're not actually that uncommon here already thanks to the random red sock fairy!!!!

Joking aside, is the consensus that environmental concerns are not yet mainstream?
