There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

Thanks for the link, plugged in the numbers - given that it doesn't allow for adjustments in the secondaries and that is where I suspect quite a saving could be made, the figures used for personal averages are incorrect for my family. My personal footprint is just over 9,000 compared to the average of nearly 11,000. I could improve it I'm sure, but only by spending money!

Still, I will look again at how I run my life and see what savings I can make.
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

I don't see why business mileage should not be included. It is what we do to earn money -so it affects the planet. I think a bus' might need to be divided between the passengers. (also school buses are fairly local thing ) Perhaps it is ludicrous that as a society we live at X and spent countless manhours and energy to work at Y. I used to live and work in Shoreditch and I now live and work here. It's not possible for most- but is that right? I think our communities are much richer with a mix of activities.

Excluding agriculture, there were 30 businesses here after the war; now there is a pub, a church (under threat), and a couple of cottage industries. Most people go to London each day and locals can't afford a house here. (this Gov. hates the countryside anyway-it's tragic what's happening-but that's another arguement)

Next one....Inspite of the above arguement. Shouldn't public transport be FREE? the Costs of cars goes up and up -but where is the money going?- so does public transport. If it is really a viable alternative- it should at least be reduced in price.

It is really complicated to see the energy consumption of the things we use. I can't see that you can argue against a woodbuning stove because the steel industry uses carbon to produce it. (you'll find most insulation and solar panels aren't very green and groovy to produce either) We have an oil boiler here which we can't afford to replace with a woodpellet burner -but we reduce its use constantly in favour of a couple of old woodburners (one of them was built in 1919 -has that paid for itself?) as we have lots of offcuts and access to local timber.

I don't object to quality products but why is there this attitude that everything is disposable? Sometimes things just require cleaning but no -its 'out with the old and in with the new.' The whole thing is an exercise in style over substance. Just try and get most things fixed these days -you'll be openly ridiculed.

Our real resposibility is not to wear the hemp knickers in the cave -but to drastically reduce our wastage and step back from this obscene consumer frenzy. Each and every one of us can, and must, do that.

I've just taken on a second allotment with that very intention. I can just hear my friends and family now.."quick hide...here he comes again with his courgette glut and dreadful home-made plonk!"

Totally agree with the first para and really well said in the second.

As consumers we 'want it now' and so we get it. We kids ourselves that we need it and we deserve it. It's now ingrained in us and we're handing it on to our kids and grandkids. It IS obscene and where is it going to end???

dont know if it will be considered relevant to the topic, but look at the housing market. IMO the obscenest thing of all and entirely out of control.

                7,170

We have 3 children, a car, and an income over £30,000, and that's what our figure comes out at. We buy our electricity from the 'green' tariff, which offsets a large chunk, never fly anywhere, or use any kind of public transport.
As for what we spend our money on, our last major purchases have all been to do with the allotment, including greenhouse. Not that I should be defending that anyway.

Incidentally, do you have any children Tigerella?

                    Hi

[QUOTE][Incidentally, do you have any children Tigerella/QUOTE]

I have one child, but I would have more if things were different.
Which is why I dont blame anyone for their lifestyle, and it is down to government to lead the way.
Getting back to work now, will reply more later.

                      Hi

I noticed the part where you tick a box for "green electricity" but I also signed up for this with Scotish power.
But there is only about 6% which is from wind/waves etc. So I did not tick the box.

[QUOTE][I don't see why business mileage should not be included/QUOTE]

If you do progress to paying for every bit of carbon we use, then if a business uses a lot of fuel/petrol, that should be reflected in the price of the product, not a personal allowance.
As you said it should for the school bus, the carbon used should be divided up between the passengers or the council/school.

For as long as i remember I have always been into caring about the environment.I think it quite simply comes from my mum, telling us to put our rubbish in bins and recycle what we can (even before we caught up with Germany and had different bins for different things). I live in one of the oldest streets in my area, the houses are over 100yrs old yet the council are leaving us until last to give us double glazing. I have no idea about loft insulation as ive never bn up there,OH has blocked it off,and that has helped with heating. Where I live im surrounded by ppl who dont recycle they think it infringes on there human rights.I feel as though im living in a landfill.Everyday my garden has rubbish blown and it makes me so angry.Even if the only green thing you do is put your rubbish in the correct bin and not on the floor you make a big difference.recycling saves resources and just putting your rubbish in the bins helps save so many animals habitats etc. People moan about the councils not putting in enough public bins,do they not have pockets???or hands to carry the rubbish til they get home?? I could go on FOREVER!!! Ive hardly scratched the surface
