  • The new GW programme.......

Can't see a thread on the latest series of GW .....so I'm starting one .
Don't know about anyone else but I'm a tad dissappointed with it ....there's not enough how to's especially on the veg side . I like flowers but too much time seems to be spent on looking at whats already growing in other est. gardens. I would like to see a lot more practical advice on things. Monty tweeted that he had done a slot on pruning and then there would be more veg .......did I fall asleep at that point and miss it? I think it's time there was a good regular slot dedicated to veg to help and encourage newbies.....

Ok rant over .....as you were......
S*d the housework I have a lottie to dig

So do I although they have to appeal to all and I have enjoyed what's been done so far. I like to watch his chooks. I liked the Carol Klein bits, Monty's bits but would take Joe and RdT straight out.

He pruned currants after transplanting them, which I had already done and would say is a few weeks too late.

You think at this time of year a gardening programme would have "how to sow" or "what to plant now" section.
I suppose it would be "samey" year after year.

tbh Carol Klein is a bit too ott for me but sometimes she does show good practical things. Joe swift and his garden design ......c'mon how many average households can realistically do those. How about aq design for a dog friendly garden (well one thats hard wearing ) or one for someone with a low budget.
Lets have some good practical advice for people who want to grow but haven't got a lot of time, money , ghouses, coldframes or room ........

I stopped watching GW for ages, after it started to be populated by a cast of ridiculously, theatrically over-enthusiastic people who couldn't describe even the most mundane plant without a deluge of hyperbolic adjectives and gestures.

They even made the lamentable RdT look tame by comparison.

But I watched the first of the new series and, while it was still pretty content-free, at least Carol K managed to talk like a normal enthusiast when she was talking to people, although her pieces to camera were still as blowsily overblown as ever. I actually managed to see it through to the end, although if it had gone on any longer I might have had to throw something at the screen.

Yes, I miss Geoff Hamilton as well.

Now I like to see Carol focus on varieties of snowdrops, mahonia, etc. Monty's planting of hellebores this week was perfect for me as he slotted two dark hybrids into his already established pinks and yellows, which gave me an idea. His buxus ball garden is another idea I'd like. His path building, again perfect for us as we have a brick path to redo. I find it practical and if it was thirty minutes of veg, then I would be bored. There's only so many seeds you can show being sown before you have to say - do you still not get it yet? Pricking out was also shown. Doesn't matter what seedling it is. Pricking out is well pricking out. They've shown raspberry pruning. Rhubarb division has been shown. They show how to plant onions, garlic, puddle in leeks, plant spuds and this week showed how best to mulch. Smaller area and deeper coverage.
They only have thirty minutes. Maybe call for an hour?

Wouldn't expect whole half hour on veg .......but there's more to veg than sowing seeds. We get given info on different varieties of pretties, how about info on different varieties of veg as some can vary tremendously .....different ways of growing things...

I'd quite like to see HSL get involved or some of the kitchen gardens like Manoir AQS.
