This is not advice here are some of my observations about sleep (and I know about not sleeping, honest) :-
You sleep because it is boring lying down awake for that length of time but your body needs that down time - so make yourself do it.
Often when we think we aren't sleeping we are dosing more than we realise - so make yourself do it.
Watching tv, x-box, etc very very bad for tired brain - don't do it.
(Music good as long as it's not Motorhead or similar. My favorite is Radio 4 or any talk based programmes as you sort of concentrate on what they are saying and then get too tired to bother.)
I find the problem with pain is it stops you doing the physical stuff that makes you sleep even when you are worried (busy mind/not tired body). So if there is anything physical you can do it's worth doing - swimming, repeat weight with the bits that work?
Really bad worth talking to GP/consultant about melatonin (not to be confused with melanin) although I see you can buy it off the shelf.
Anyway good luck. I'd go with getting rid of pain in the long run is the best. You just have to stop thinking "able bodied" for a few months and think "determined with a disabling problem": that'll wear you out!
