Supermarkets are there for one purpose only and thats to make money for the supermarket. Forget about serving the customer. The only reason the supermarkets stay in buisness is because the customer is so short sighted they can't see the damage supermarkets are doing. Supermarkets ARE expensive, if they wern't, they couldn't survive. Their trade is built on LOSS LEADERS, that means undercutting smaller buisnesses to steal customers for no profit. Think about it, is this really what you want?

OK. This isn't the place for political speeches and if a moderator deletes this, OK, but this is what I see and I'm worried>

I think myself I wouldn't do it, but I think I'm a stickler for the rules, kind of, so caught up, thinking I'm lost to the meaning of it all. I can see why you would do it, after all there weren't any left and most of the time the extra cost is the packing not the product. I always say if its a grey area and you can rationalise it or argue it, then you must feel ok about doing it.
Its not like you stole the sprouts!

OOOOOOOOOOOH, started something now! I hate the way supermarkets charge, I hate the way they fly stuff in from all over the world, I hate the way they package. BUT, come on people, why do they survive? Because, we the people, let them! Yes, I do use supermarkets, but I am very particular about what I buy (in fact, was in Sainsbury's once, and my wife picked up a pack of asparagus from Peru!!! moaned and put it back. A lady nearby heard this, and put a load of stuff from her trolley back!) but I do complain and take them to task. No I am not a moaning old sod, but a bit more complaining from more people would make them change.

Those that shop on price alone are this persons lawfull prey.

I'd call it theft .You deceived the supermarket as to where you got the sprouts. As such I can only say that I think you broke the law.
If you had bought the sprouts in the pack and then opened it at the till and left the packaging I would have a different point of view.
There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

But why should sprouts be hideously more expensive because they are wrapped in plastic? surely it doesn't cost that much more for the plastic trays?

My friends OH always buys loose calabress and always snaps off the stalk as he won't pay for something he isn't going to eat

Not a problem for me as I don't buy veggies in supermarkets and if I did, why would I want them wrapped in plastic? Wouldn't say it was against the law but probably not in keeping with what the supermarkets want. Personally don't see why anybody would want to buy them wrapped up and think that supermarkets shouldn't be doing it anyway.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

The other angle I find is that I dont want as many sprouts, or beans, or whatever as they put into the plastic packaging so why should I be forced to buy them all? I think supermarkets make enough out of us as it is, to make the fatcats even fatter and the producers even poorer and the environment even more polluted - plastic packaging??? Wrong!!!!

You are not 'forced' to buy them all - you don't have to buy anything if you don't want to. Try using your local greengrocer before he goes out of business due to the supermarket competition! You greegrocer will let you buy 6 sprouts if that is all you want. And they will be fresher to boot!

my mum lives alone and always needs less veg than you get in the plastic things. when loose has been unavailable she always marches up to the veg guy. And as much as I loathe the big supermarkets (ooooh and I do), when she's asked for help not one supervisor has ever refused to open a packet or break a seal in order to sell her what she needs.

this next story shows me up as being a bit of a ditz but is quite amusing and proves that if i'm representative of the general public then we're all really useless about how much stuff costs. Mum picked up one large parsnip. It went through the checkout at £2.25.

I didn't even blink. No idea that's not what you pay for one. I need to pay more attention!

£2.25 for one parsnip! How big was it?

We are in a small village with one post office and one general store - no fresh veg at all. Our nearest supermarket is ASDA. Our bus takes not far short of an hour to do the 6 mile journey into Hull (It goes EVERYWHERE!) so I don't do that often. The city centre has no small veg dealers. I am stuck with ASDA - or my own. Hence GYO!

I despise everything about supermarkets. although I can't say that what you did was right Laura. I used to be a broccoli stalk snapper too! but my wife thinks that has best flavour and vitamins (Jack Spratt for vegitarians). Don't answer those embarrasing questions -as you are probably being filmed-vote with your feet.
