but I need my daily fruit. Strawbs now have green fruits on tho, so won't be too long
I KNOW it isn't a fruit but yesterday I stewed a big pan of rhubarb to put in the fridge. My dad always had a bowl of stewed rhubarb in the fridge for breakfast or a quick pud. Certainly keeps you going!
One good point about supermarket veg. When I was looking for some shallot sets (a bit late in the season) I could only find a few packets in my local Homebase, but at £2.99 for six shallots, I decided to decline their kind offer and go without.
The next day, I picked up a string of eighteen shallots for £1.60 in Waitrose - they tasted fantastic and half of them are now growing happily on the allotment. I've got no idea what type they are, but if they produce a decent crop, I know where I'll be looking for my sets next year.
How lovely to read all the comments about supermarket avoiders. We use the local market and shops as much as possible, but there are some things that it just makes sense to buy at the supermarket (although some of our local asian shops are fabulous for herbs and spices, rice and pulses). I do use Sainsbury for things like baked beans and tins of tomatoes, but growing our own made me realise that even the local veg market is expensive, and they quite often import things. I'm trying to educate one stall holder (I've been going to him for years) so I always ask where things are from, and occasionally say 'No thanks' because of airmiles.
Keep up the good work everyone.
can you imagine if i was to go back to asda, they always have loose mushrooms, with the paper bag, and put 1 mushroom in 1 bag, and filled my trolley to the top, or really bulging, over the top.then went to the till, i can see the cashiers face, "i will have to call the manager" but, i have every right to do it, the manager can't really have a go at me for wasting resources. can she ? Thanks to the people on here with the positive responses, but still appreciate all feedback.
