bleeding trees

Not swearing at them . For the first time ever, I've got a silver birch tree bleeding after cutting off a few annoying twigs. Never encountered this before in all my time gardening for a living. Tried applying some dry lime but it has just literally washed it off again. Anyone any ideas? Probably just the sap rising at a rate of knots with the sun shining but I'd hate to think I've damaged a lovely tree because of a few dangling twiglets

If they really were only twiglets they should seal themselves with no major harm done.

AP folks tap Birch trees and use the sap for tea or make syrup with it. so it won't do the tree any long term harm.

Ty Rl, Bren. I've googled and even seen reference to someone using a blowtorch to try to seal a bleeding root without success. Seen reference to Birch sap wine and also the following "The Russians tapped the Birches (to make a very strong booze) so much during the horse drawn era hundreds of acres were destroyed as the trees bleed to death". Me, I can settle for a newcastle brown, a hobgoblin or of course a pint of my favourite

We've made birch sap wine - it was a bit like Retsina (I like that)! It was impossible to bung up the hole though and the trees died a few years later - probably as a consequence of the tapping. They were due for the chop anyway so it didn't matter. This was a hole in the trunk, not a few little twiglets I'm sure yours will seal up - Put an ice cube on it

Water it well, and keep it well watered until the bleeding stops AP, to limit its moisture loss. They like to grow in shady places and by water, so they need a lot of water.

Tell him you have observed the tree seems to be in trouble but you will do your best to save it

lol, you devious man. My customer is a lovely lady and I told her the troof. Had to as she has to walk under it to get to her car and the sap may have a detrimental affect on her clothing
