Bumblebee boxes can be hit and miss, you just need to site them well, herb beds are good and also flowers that attract bees. See:

Andrew check out the link to Bumblebee videos (above) - a german site with bits in english, they actually show a queen accepting an artificial nest. There's lots of info about nests and how to get bumblebees interested.

they nest under my Silver birch most years. I guess its warm & dry there.

Saw a great picture of an insect nesting/hibernating place somebody had created. Thy used an old set of shelves with old books on one shelf (bind to the back) and twiggs & bamboo on the next. It had been painted in blue and had a really rustic look. Sounds weird I know but it actually looked really nice. I think they were trying to demonstrate what you can make for little effort and a bit of scrounging. Just wish I had an old bookcase. Currently keeping an eye out in skips for one.!
