    Heres the boiler...

    and some airing cupboard...

But i cant get into the loft tonight, it'll wake the little blighters..

I did read up on those valves going but as you said normally people who's motor/actuator had gone had no heating rather than lots of heating! lol

I'm guessing replacing that valve would be a system drain, and that would be the point where i bow out and get someone in!

The annoying thing is i was sure last week i turned the thermostat down and it all worked, then them lot turned it back up! grrr

Anyways i'll head up the loft again tomorrow... thansk for your help!!

And yes... i definatly would prefer to be by the side of a large body of water!

        Hi Captain,

Don't bother bleeding anything that's to be done if they are cold not hot. Electric motor in valve sealed unit not available for maintainence.

As I thought the 15mm pipe below the boiler is the gas supply nothing to do with your problem, the two 22mm of the top of the boiler are the primary flow and return pipes.

Until I see the loft pics I can't be 100% but it is starting to look like it can only be one of two things.

        (A) The Tower valve which would need replacing and this would mean a system drain down.

        (B) And this is unlikely as you would have noticed the problem before. The return pipe from the bottom of the cylinder is not connected into the primary return in the correct place, its easy to check.

There are 4 pipes going to or coming from the cylinder. The one with the red valve is the cold water feed bring water down from the tank in the loft. The one off the very top of the cylinder is the hot water draw-off carrying hot water to your taps. Of the other two which connect into the side of the cylinder the lower one is the return pipe carrying cooler waters back to the boiler for reheating. This pipe must tee into the primary return after all the returns from the radiators. Trace it back in the loft and there should be no other tee joints between where that pipe tee's in and the boiler.

          Hi potty...we have a development!!
Whilst in the loft yesterday i switched the arm on the diverter valve from auto to manual...just out of curiosity!! Lol
as you can probably guess it was rather warm when i woke this morning with the radiators on full blast no matter what the room stat said.
I went back up about 40 mins ago and switched back to auto....put theboiler on with the room stat on low and 40mins later... Cold pipes!!! All round the house! I even turned the dial on the boiler onto full for a bit... Maybe one of the pipes was a few degrees warmer but certainly not hot!? And all the rads stone cold...

Good news for now then, the valve was stuck, but it could/will happen again.

Has your system ever been cleaned? I asked because the detritus formed in the system over time can cause this.
