Allotment. Banjo or no banjo. You decide.

My wife is not fond of my banjo playing in the house so I am considering moving all banjo playing activity to the allotment (hopefully getting shed soon). The question is will this annoy fellow allotmenteers? Your thoughts most appreciated!

I don't like any noise when I'm gardening, except birdsong.


One of the neighbours plays clarinet in his shed, which is a beautiful noise, but banjo: no no no (twangy, annoying )

It would really annoy me. There is a chap near me who plays his radio, if I wanted to listen to the radio I would stay at home and listen to it. I'm afraid your banjo playing would fit in the same category. Could your wife go to the allotment while you play at home?

As we used to say to my Mother when she sang - "You should be on the radio - then we could turn you off!)
I've no idea how far the sound of a banjo carries - if its not far, ask your neighbours if they mind, or play when they're not around. I can think of much worse noises

Love the responses.....thank you. I'll probably keep the allotment banjo free then. Not sure about the idea of peace and quiet up there though as there's always someone mowing, strimming or rotivating. :-).

Depends how good your playing is! We live in a fairly remote area with a lake and lots of forest, but every summer a guy arrives who goes to practise his horn blowing (a French hunting horn which is quite musical) around the lake. It probably drives his wife mad which is why he is exiled to the countryside. To start with it's quite charming, but after an hour or two, I want to hear the cuckoos, nightingales and all the other birds instead of his tuneless playing!
Have you thought about hiring out your services as a pest controller? Maybe your banjo playing might drive away flea beetle or pigeons? Worth a try!

Go for it i love abit of alternative music. One of my allotment neighbours plays some jazzy numbers on there radio, gets you bopping along while weeding.

Radios etc. banned on our plot unless you use earphones which is the way it should be - nothing worse than being bombarded with someone else's idea of 'good music' used to hate it on train journeys when music was just loud enough for you to hear it buzzing through earphones which meant it was obviously turned up too loud to be heard only by the person with the earphones - aaaargh
