I think I've turned into a bit of a tomato snob....
One of the lads at our lottie said that our oldest resident had no tomatoes this year (he's not been well) but said it's ok I've given him some moneymaker. I actually felt my nose turn up ..............as I said I'll bring him some plants . I blame you lot on here

I know exactly what you mean Bins - although I do grow Gardener's Delight as I still think its hard to beat! If its a variety that's sold as a plant in a DIY store or supermarket I don't want it - I only want to grow things with funny names

Love it! - It hits home when you try to off-load your spares and some people don't want them cos they don't recognise their names *shock horror*

For me, a tomato is a tomato. The difference,
Is whether I grew it not. I'm still naive enough in not being about to taste the difference between varieties; but yes, can appreciate how something taste bland and shop bought.

F1 varieties aside, as divisive as they are; I love all my different varieties the same. As long as they work!

when you say you made a mistake with the Black Russian, what do you mean ? As in growing them ?

I have a few on the go this year and they seem strong enough; slow growing, but what isn't this year?

Funnily enough, I haven't grown Moneymaker before (mainly due to comments here), but this year having received free seeds, I sowed some (have one survivor) to see what all the NON fuss was about!! So, its definitely folk on here

Well this year I have more diversity than ever before, and I understand what you mean about MM. However I do have a couple of Shirleys, some sungold, a plum, a black something or other that VC gave me, I can't remember what it was called, a beefsteak, and some others I can't remember. there's a dozen or so and 8 different varieties this year.

Every year I'm getting bolder and more diverse as my knowledge increases, I've even been looking at a bigger greenhouse so I can grow more again....

One of our helpers at the school garden grows extra Moneymaker plants every year and gives us them to plant in the tunnel. Every year I ask the kids to choose the ones they want to plant and every year they go for the ones with weird names and ignore the MM! This year they've gone for Smurfs, Yellow Stuffer, Golden Nugget, Black Krim, Black Icicle, World's Miracle and Early Tanana

That's a comfort darcy. Of mine, the sturdy ones lost their lead shoot somehow and the others were spindly and weak.

Don't you roll those eyes at me young man - how very dare you? Me? Make a mistake growing them? Now if you had asked me that last year (or the year before, I forget) when I tried to drown all my toms, I would have admitted it. No trip, I have plenty of other healthy plants, just disappointed with the performance of this variety. Seeds were from Seed Parade. It was a request from someone at work, so I kept a few. Wonder what's happened to the ones I've given to her?
