  • Bad news for veggie chocoholics!

"Some of the UK's best-selling chocolate bars, such as Mars and Twix, will no longer be suitable for vegetarians.
Also affecting brands such as Snickers and Maltesers, owner Masterfoods said it had started to use animal product rennet to make its chocolate products.......

Masterfoods said it had started using rennet from 1 May and non-affected products had a "best before date" up to 1 October.
    .....
It will now also be found in Bounty, Minstrels and Milky Way products, and the ice cream versions of all Masterfoods' bars.

"If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate," said Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods.

The Vegetarian Society said it was "extremely disappointed".

I don't actually eat lots of cr@ppy chocolate - I thought some folk might be interested. I was quite surprised by a seemingly 'backwards' step by Masterfoods.

While I've worked in a food factory and know what can happen 'by mistake' that is totally different from using your 'consumer power' and deciding not to buy certain products.

My fave is Green and Blacks, but think they sold out to Cadburys a while back. I'm not a vegetarian but I can't imagine why Masterfoods has made this decision. Lots of vegetarians I know are also chocoholics and won't be happy bunnies I imagine.

I reckon they've done their arithmetic and worked out the number of veggies who will stop buying their products won't be worth a diddly squat. That's the world of big business.

Although I'm not veggie I thnk it is an appalling decision and wouldn't have a problem boycotting Mars Bars etc. on that basis.

However I don't consider a Mars Bar etc as chocolate and my preference is for high cocoa good quality choccie which doesn't contain vegetable or milk fat I can/could still have my chocolate and eat it.

                        Anyone for 72%?

Not too taken with the 85% I find it a bit bland. Bendicks do a 72% in five lttle slabs currently 99p per pack of five in One-Stop. I've pretty much worked my way through the darker chocolate at Lidl too.
