I was really very interested by a mention of Carob (Ceratonia siliqua) by George Sobol (of Plants for a Future) in this month's magazine. For those who haven't read it yet, it talks about the possibility of growing this very interesting plant in the UK, and it brought back many memories with the mention. Does anyone else remember how these were one included in the 3d (or 'threepence' in old money) Lucky Bags in the early 1960's? I can well remember my bewilderment on expecting a plastic soldier or a spacemen and instead being confronted by what appeared to be a very strange looking artifact that looked like a very shrivelled up banana. The taste was something else, though, and was rich and deeply satisfying, but I never saw it again after that brief window in time. I would love to grow some today, and intend to follow up the link on Untitled Page to sound this out. Has anyone ever grown them, or does anyone remember them from the Lucky Bags mentioned?

I like carob on the 9Bars. I remember as a kid buying sweets with carob coating from the Polish deli in town. Sadly no longer there. When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

I'm not a chocoholic, so don't have the same aversion. I did used to eat carob when I was being very healthy, because carob made me less inclined to eat the whole packet. I liked mint carob the best.
I saw some seeds for carob in a seed catalogue recently and thought.......maybe. Wasn't thinking about the dogs. So I'd have the cats going mental from the catmint, and the dogs on a carob high.....yeah.Ali

Carob chat...
All,
Really heartening that my post prompted such a response...I think the thing I was most interested in acquiring was an actual Carob pod, so although I haven't looked yet I intend to scour the interweb for some and see what I can find. I'll report back with the findings on my return!...
Dontcha just love this mag and Forum for sparking so many interesting chats like this?...
