  • Warning to new GYOs'

    Don't do it!!

Once you've gone down the slippery slope of buying your 1st packet of seeds, you'll be hooked. That little packet of Carrots or Peas with it's lovely picture on the front, boasting ready to eat in 10 wks, they're not lies, it's their way of sucking you in.

Before you know it, you're planning your 1st compost heap and how long before you can create your own, free, great compost to improve your soil. You'll probably get yourself a wall planner to more clearfully plan next yrs veg and thinking you'll hit the ground running next year.

More packets of seeds than could feed the entire third world. Do you get yourself a 3rd freezer to hold all your well grown food. Who of your friends do you offer some veg to.

You might as well sell your retired mower, because the raised beds that pop up for veg appear quicker that the Raddish you will grow within them. 2 ltr pop bottles filled with nettles not to mention the soil i have bought, dear god.... The soil i have bought. I must have bought at least 24 56 litre bags. I bet you can see my little garden from space.

So the second greenhouse, this morning, is lying flat packed in the garden and I've already filled it, bought a second compost bin from the tip for a fiver, that's an art, i now do regular visits to the tip on the way home from work.

You'll spend hours reading on the tinternet, magazines, even buying books. Talk to loads of people about how your tomatoes are doing and will you have potatoes when you dig them up.

So what are you waiting for!!! Open that packet of seeds, tear the little white tinfoil packet and start scattering, take photos, grab a glass of something and make an appointment with a psychiatrist.....so you can tell him all about your hobby :-D

Next thing you know you're scouring the hedgerows for Elderflower, haws, rosehips, sloes, and everything else you didn't know you could use but now can't be without.

Then its not good enough to just plant seeds, you have to trick them to, and grow them under propagators months ahead of when they would naturally appear, and you realise that you now need a polytunnel to go with the greenhouse.

Never passing a skip without having a look in because you never know when you're going to need that bit of wood or netting.

.......out at ridiculous hours of the night hunting down slugs with a torch in one hand and a bucket in the other....
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

Oh, and then you have to learn to cook it...

                      Mmmm, pi.
Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing-'Oh how beautiful!" and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives

then there's which creatures live or die.
culling the weak from the strong.
providing the perfect conditions and environment.
giving a perfect start, then allowing to grow and mature naturally.

Then there's pallet obsession - the perceived need to collect every pallet lying around in front gardens and driveways - just in case they come in useful (and they will .....eventually)
