My rant: After almost eight weeks of resting my right knee following another kneecap dislocation everything is pretty much back together unless I go downhill. Sadly my left knee has objected to doing all the work, the knee cap has mistracked and that knee is now melon sized.

I'd quite like to go for a walk, garden, cycle, ride my motorbike, not to mention ski soon.

    • Got back from lunch to find message from colleague that my son has rung and can I ring him back on his mobile. Ring him back - straight to answer phone, try ringing house, no answer. Phone OH to get him to try phoning - no success. By now I'm panicking that something has happened to him or the dog. Should I ring the vet in case he's gone there? How would he get to the vet anyway? Oh my God, what's happened!
Ring again, get him on his mobile "What's the matter?" Reply - "Did you feed the dog this morning and where's my grey T-shirt?" Teenagers

      • FFS why do people have to swim widths in the pool!! If you can't swim a length start in the shallow end and turn when you get to the middle.

        • Very small rantette, but could we have a N/A button rather than having to type it in each time on the gyo 2013 award nominations website survey thingy, please?

                • A packet of 50 onion sets should contain at least 50 onion sets. I had 2 packets of T&M First Early, one packet contained exactly 50 but the other had only 45. Poor show there, chaps. Were you assuming that I wouldn't (or can't) count to 100?

My Mum used to swim widths because she was scared to get out of her depth...

Hmmm...Years ago they had diving pools - when I was a kid I swam every day at my local one ( when it was open as it was outside) and that had diving boards and it was very deep!! But today they are much shallower.
The pool I swim at now is 33 metres long and 5' 10'' at the deep end! At 4' 11'' I can still bob up and down and touch the floor at the 25 metres mark. (Average size pool) So I'm struggling to get my head around why they don't stop and turn... Its what I made my kids do when they weren't 'able' swimmers.

                        • I had to be rescued from a pool when i had cramp in the deep bit (when I was a kid) ..since then I have to be able to touch the bottom. I'm 5'5 and the thought of going halfway down a pool and then having to turn round scares the bejasus out of me just incase I'm at a point where I can't comfortably touch the bottom and no I can't bob up and down cos if i went under I'd panic.....

                          • Perhaps I just don't get it then! I've taken my kids swimming for years, I've walked them to the depth that they are comfortable at and they know that they are allowed no further. Why doesn't that apply to adults? Find out where your depth is, mark it and turn at that point....

                            • It is an irrational fear...I can swim but it's just a panic thing when you think you've gone out of your limit .

                              Sorry ......chatting

                              • I'm with Bins on this. Not a confident swimmer, can't bear having my head under water, panic when I can't walk on the bottom. I'd make all pools about 4'6" everywhere. And I can't turn round, swimming. Have to put my feet down, then turn round.
All goes back to being a very shortsighted kid, who wasn't allowed to wear her specs in the pool, so couldn't really see what was going on and the other kids would swim away and abandon me. And because I was scared of the water, and didn't have the confidence to jump into something I couldn't see, the teacher pushed me in and I floundered about gulping in mouthfuls of chlorine and thought I would drown.
Many many years later, we were on holidays in the Virgin islands, on a boat trip to the coral reef, and everyone was encouraged to swim from the side of the boat to see the reef, with snorkel and mask. I really wanted to do this but the crew could see that I was petrified to go in, out of my depth, so they gave me a life belt to hang onto and one of them swam with me, towing me around the reef. It was magical, I forgot I couldn't touch bottom. Suddenly, I realised that I wasn't being towed any more and, looking through the clear water, I could see that they had tethered my life belt to a rock, and abandoned me Panic set in again............
Maybe there should be 2 pools - one for swimmers and one for paddlers
