  • Is it me, or did anyone else here the big PR stunt that T@@@o's are going to stop BOGOF's on salads because collectively (them and us) we send 73% of salads to the garbage.

Forgive me here, but I don't see any public spirit here, big T are wasting money getting rid of salads they made the supplier give them for nothing, so out of the goodness of their heart they are going to stop the BOGOF's so that we don't waste salads, how gullible do I actually look.....

    Don't answer that.

    • Did you know that the base rate (or whatever the proper name is) of energy dropped by 45% last year. I don't remember any price cuts I do remember the price hikes, and now it's happening again.

Also, smug parents we've just met at Sainsbugs telling us (smugly) that they don't have a tv, haven't had one for years. Their children are not bogged down by tv, influenced by celebs and advertising hype. Ok. Um...don't your teens all have laptops and the internet? Are you completely aware of what they're watching? I didn't think so either.......

When I was a teenager at school (a long time ago) the one boy in the class who's parents had no TV was always top in the class in all subjects. Makes you think.

        • My rant is the dumbing down of our language, phrases like "Jennifer Aniston works little black dress" when the mean "wears" and the word fail, meaning mistake or accident such as "Collection of fashion fails"

Makes you think what? I had school friends with no TV, they were at the opposite end of the scale.

            • Indeed. I cannot say the same for one of the aforementioned children - he brought his laptop to our house last year and tried to offload a lot of porn. We have a tv, three of my four children have degrees. They were encouraged to find other interests beside tv, such as reading, but they also use the internet etc. I think I'm trying to say that you can't just remove the tv and expect your kids to be better as a consequence - you need to encourage them to do other things or they will find other ways to watch what has been forbidden.

              • People who start sentences with 'So,...'

Oh, and the stupid woman in the red car, that I encountered earlier. The gap she was 'trying' to reverse into was a tarmac drive that was at least three times the width of her car, but she still had to do a back-and-forth shunt to get in, and still ended up against the fence on the grass. My advice love - give the ruddy thing away and get the Bus!

                  • I remember a boy in school who didn't have a TV, he used to preach a lot of drivel from his parents about the evil found within Ribena among other things. Needless to say a boy with very individual opinions and no knowledge of TV found it hard to make friends....you have to be very careful not to make your child a victim, school children are far less forgiving than adults.

I believe in balance in all things, TV is absolutely fine aslong as you are careful what your children watch. In fact it can be a lot easier controlling what your children watch than it can be what they read. My DD has been gifted a lot of Jacqueline Wilson books and some of the subject matter is quite heavy. All videos come with an age guide yet hardly any books these days have one, and I don't have time to advance read ahead of my DD to decide whether its appropriate or not. She gets through 3-4 books a week.

                    • I think the clever clogs I mentioned did so well at school because his parents did do a lot of things with him. He didnt get teased then but probably would now. I also think the internet used properly must be a boon to students, I wish I had had it in my school days. We didnt stop our children watching TV but we did keep an eye on what they watched and for how long. Moderation in all things.
Television does seem to show some horrible stuff nowadays, I remember being sent to bed in the middle of quatermass because I was watching it from behind a pillow i was so scared, all it was was a blob of paper mache being dragged with some fishing line!

                        • Ah...those were the days - I used to watch Dr Who, Stingray and The Tomorrow People from behind cushions. I would have loved to have the internet when I was at school - I loved school, proper little swat that I was.

It has occurred to me that I am home alone and could, therefore, watch the tv channel of my choice - hurrah! But no. I cannot figure out how to get the tv from the auxiliary (or whatever it's called) channel to the recorded programmes on Sky to watch Montalbano.

                          Booger.

So in spite of celebrity chefs with their 20 minute recipes and 15 minute meals throwing cold/warm/caesar/Nicoise/salads at us right left and centre, and persuading people that they should buy salad and use it, only a quarter of people eat it, the rest pick out the protein (cheese/chicken/salami whatever) bit and chuck the limp green stuff away, or worse, leave it sitting in the fridge and put off using it until it has gone brown and manky then throw it out.

My rant: I'm growing winter lettuce seedlings on the windowsill. I hate lettuce. I always think home grown will somehow taste different. It never does.
