Sewing machine manuals which list the 'oil points' in order from the top of the machine, ending up with those underneath. Following in the order given results in all the newly oiled points on the top and side dripping when the machine is flipped over to do the last 3 points on the bottom.
Starting at the bottom and working up would mean any drips of over-enthusiastically applied oil at the bottom would drop harmlessly into the tray underneath once the machine is righted, as opposed to the top points dripping, onto the jeans of the person who has the machine upsidedown to apply the oil to the final points.
