Have I grow the tallest Lettuce? I was just about to pop it into my compost and sow some more seeds and thought I wonder how tall a Lettuce can actually grow? As you can see I still have been removing the leaves and eating them, they still taste like lettuce @ the moment.

There is no good to come of this experiment, please don't shoot me down, I'm just curious. Does lettuce that has bolted taste any different?

Ooh, I like being silly I have a feeling that the lettuce may become bitter eventually. Meanwhile, I'm sure I've seen a recipe for pickled Lettuce stems that taste like ginger. - or I could be making it up as usual

Nah, I've had them taller than that. Why not let it flower and set seed?

Pickled lettuce stem sounds interesting if you ever recall where you saw it. Might be something I could do with all those bolted lettuces I have.

Fpund it!! (Penguin book of Jams, Pickles and Chutneys by David & Rose Mabey)
          Preserved lettuce stalks
Use stalks from plants that run to seed
Strip the stalks and peel off the outer fibrous sheath - use the inner core.
Chop core into pieces and weigh.
Weigh out equal quantity of sugar.
Put sugar and a few pieces of root ginger in a pan with enough water to cover the pieces of lettuce stalk.
Boil up the syrup then add the stalks.
Remove from heat and leave overnight.
Next day drain off syrup and boil up again. Pour over stalks and let stand all day.
Repeat this operation until the stems looks clear and the syrup has thickened.
During final boiling of syrup add juice of a lemon.
Pack stalks into jar and cover with syrup.
(has been likened to Chinese ginger)

Ginger.... (Jon gags), sorry that's like eating the contents of an ash tray (I suspect).... Oh I've never seen a Lettuce flower, I must google a pic, not sure I'm gonna need any seeds, have you seen how many are in a pack of seeds lol?... But I am curious with reading other subjects on saving some seeds. Might be worth a try.

Thanks VC although peeling lettuce stems does sound a bit tedious. Love ginger, may give it a try. Not this week tho am off to Isle of Wight for a week off, so may be offine for a while.

Wonder if it would work with cabbage stalks? They're easy to peel..............
Or Brussels sprouts stalks - Ooohh, imagine a really long stick of ginger flavoured brassica
