well that looked like a bog standard cassis or blackcurrant to me! But its a hybrid between a blackcurrant and a gooseberry? Is that right?

Yup. When I asked my French friends they'd never heard of that cross- and so had no idea of their name in French!

I've never tasted one- although the bloke on the lottie next to ours back in the UK had a couple of bushes I was a good gal and never nicked one to try out the flavour!

They are sharp like a gooseberry. They grow HUGE and are very easy from cuttings. The berries grow as gooseberries. singly not as a bunch, and are the size of a small seedless grape. I have seen the plants for sale in the garden centres here.

I bought one this year - groseillier a cassis on the tag - and am so looking forward to the fruit next year. The only thing better than blackcurrants is BIG blackcurrants

Perhaps you should start a trend and name it yourself! Groscass, Casseiller or something
