  • Hobbies - What do you do in winter?

With the constant downpours over the last couple of days I've began to wonder what all you gardeners do to pass the time during the winter months?

  • #2
I make gardening plans and lists for the following year!!

I try to get the worst of the weeding done and cover up the soil to prevent a build up of weeds.

There are still lots of crops though to crop though!

I mostly get on with crafts to sell at Xmas/ Summer Fairs- or family tree research for a change.

OH- I forgot to mention!!...we're renovating our 350 yr old house- so there are always indoor jobs to get on with!

Not quite a hobby but I do get a fair bit more housework done in the winter months!

Having said that I've got loads of things I still want to do on the plot which will get put off until winter (sort out a muck heap, sort out paths, sort/clean the greenhouse, painting the inside of my shed, organise all the junk/potentially useful things etc.)

Then, like Nicos, I want to plan ready for next year so I'm better prepared... so lists, plans and sorting through the seeds need doing.

No rest for the proverbial! ; )

In winter I garden doing all those things that cannot be done when things are growing. Gardening is an all year round occupation.

I tend to make loads of home brew wines over the winter to store for those lovely summer evenings when you want a nice cool glass of something but dont have the spare time to make it.

There is always something to do,the ground can be dug over, collect any leaves for leaf mould,do any renovations as in paint sheds/fences,plan for next year,as in,net cages, washing pots, general all around clean up,we plan building a polytunnel of some sort,at home chill a bit, choose seeds ext, knitting, sewing, and best of all, enjoy cooking and eating the winter veggies, knowing how they have been grown, and proud at what has been achieved,

I chill a bit - figuratively and literally
I don't do more housework, mores the pity.
I'm trying to sort out the house a bit this year, and doing some farm work that can be done in winter.
I cook more, so there's loads of meals to pull out of the freezer on a cold day.
I like to walk around the area with and without the dogs, enjoy the views, get some exercise without tripping over wriggly things, and plan what I could and would do if I had unlimited time and money.

Last winter I spent a lot of time preparing my new plot. I played chess every Wednesday night. Ran the Family History Website and helped produce FHS booklets for sale to augment the FHS funds and attended FHS meetings every Thursday night. I also watched Premier League Football every Saturday, Sunday and any weekdays it was on. When not doing these things I read a few books.

Oh - I almost forgot - all this was done outwith baby/grandchildren sitting duties to allow shopping and the odd evening out
