  • Price of supermarket fruit and veg

I've just topped and tailed 1.181 kilos of gooseberries and just thought I would check online how much they would cost to buy.

Googled and found Sainsburys are selling them at £2 for 200g. Flipping heck, that makes my gooseberries worth £11.81

prices are unreal - fruits always the most expensive as lots of supermarkets have offers on the veg.

flavour coupled with satisfaction of them being your own and added to the on-tap freshness of cut and come/pick as needed meakes the lot priceless for me though.

Don't get me started on this, not after a week buying at Dutch markets. The taste of those peaches will live on in my memory forever. I ruined a good tshirt with dripping juice, but it was sooooooo worth it. And they were cheap - as were the huge apricots and cherries.

Have you read that the head of Tesco is saying that fruit and veg will rise in cost at a rapid rate. Seems we have had cheap produce for some time and the reality is everything will rise.

At Liege (Belgium) one kilo of cherries - huge black ones - was €7. The peaches were two kilos for €5 and apricots were two kilos for €4. The prices were almost the same in Maastricht. We bought more cherries from the farm along the road from where we stayed; they were smaller red cherries and a kilo was €5. Cherries are big business in Limburg, and I'd love to go back in Autumn for the apple & pear harvest.....

Just before we came home, my APs bought more cherries from a Turkish guy. They wanted a kilo, the guy weighed them out and then asked if they were taking them to England. Yes, they said. Oh, well...you'll need need more than a kilo! He said his BinL lives in England and he has firsthand experience of the carp fruit we have here, so he gave them an extra kilo free!!
