  • Gardeners hands ... Lady gardeners

    Hi guys
I appreciate that as gardeners our hands get grubby and dried out and I do wear gloves almost all the time but I do need my hands looking nice at work (customer service manager) an they are looking rather the worse for wear at the moment :/.My nails are no problem, I keep them manicured an they are strong they never break, it's just the dried out skin look that I hate.
I have tried loads o hand creams, Norwegian formula , body shop hemp regular and overnight treatment, liz Earle , morrisons own intensive, aqueous cream I can't find anything that keeps the skin on my hands hydrated for more than a hour or two.

I appreciate this this is fickle stuff but I have to balance my life between looking like a scarecrow when tending my crops and looking smart an manicured when in the office.

Any hand saving tips other than gloves that I use already. Any miracle treatments?

Vaseline Intensive Care Hand and Nail. If your hands are really bad, slap it on at night and go to bed in cotton gloves

I always wear rubber gloves inside my gardening gloves. If my hands are rough, I plaster on a moisturiser like Nivea inside the rubber gloves. Feels a bit squishy at first, but that way you can treat your hands whilst being in the garden. I save my washing gloves that have developed punctures for this.

There's a boots cream called cremolia, it's cheap and smells a bit medicinal, but you know when you've put too much on because it goes flaky.

I think its too late for me

A few months ago I jammed my hand in the door and dented all my nails. They are just growing back now and the sticky tape is to stop them bending back inside my gloves.
Nail varnish would look a bit silly, don't you think

Flippin Eck Veggiechicken, that looks like it must have hurt like hades at the time!!
Looks like they will recover though! . Just ordered some cheap white cotton gloves from eBay to wear overnight for some intensive treatment. Will try the vasoline intensive care first.

VC - You've left bits of Hazel's scarecrow gloves over your nails - if you're struggling to get them off I'll lend you my Stanley knife

get some barrier cream to put on before you do any work, stops them drying out and stops the dirt getting ingrained.

It was a trifle painful. I said words I didn't know I knew One of them has split lengthwise but I'm sure it will recover.

My OH works in a restaurant and is constantly washing his hands which makes them dry out, crack and sometimes even bleed. Felxitol hand cream applied at night and then topped with cotton gloves works wonders.

A couple of weeks ago, my hands got really dried out, rough and stained from weeding without my gloves and I sat with my fingers and thumbs pushed into lemon wedges while I was watching TV. It took care of the staining and, surprisingly, the dry roughened skin was much improved too.

                            Bending nails back. GAH.

Actually, I actually just looked at the photo. I can see it's tape, not your nails, I thought it was your nails all smashed. Not AS bad, but still the thought makes me toes curl.
