I hadn't thought o that Mothhawk it's this stuff Now Foods, Solutions, Pure Lanolin, 7 fl oz (207 ml) | eBay. It must be cosmetic grade ( I hope) it is recommended for skin. It just turned up today. It does look like axel grease though !. I likened it to slug gloop in stickiness , just waiting for the gloves to turn up now . I have tried a wee bit on one finger to check for allergies tonight.

Ok ... Been using the a lanolin for a couple of weeks now. Must say its the best hand treatment I have tried yet an the cheapest use to the size of the pot. I have used a bit each night ( doesn't smell lie lamb thank goodness) and used it with cotton gloves twice now. I have used it on the psoriasis on my arms and knees and I can honestly say I ave seen a good improvement that is equal to the effect I could only get from prescription steroid creams before . My gardeners hands look much better, better than any other creams I have tried. Think this pot o a lanolin is going to last me months and months because it is a bit like axel grease but its all absorbed by the morning so I leave it next to my bed for a last thing at night only hand cream. No need to top it up in the day time I'm sold .

I'm really sensitive to the smell of soap - the unperfumed ones - because they always smell like animal fat to me. Would axle grease have the same effect

I don't think so, it's not a animal fat smell at all. I know this because my hand tanned Orkney sheepskin had the dog barking at it from the sheep smell. This smells clean, a minerals sort of smell.

Glad it worked for you. I was going to suggest a homemade comfrey salve/ointment.
