Thanks for all the replies, that's given me plenty to think about.

How sharp are her knives, well when they come off the strop the test is to see if I can shave the light hairs on my arm, yep they are very sharp.

Zaz I am only allowed in the kitchen to clean, wash up, decorate etc if I go near her beloved food prep area its like WW3. Guess I made to nice a job of installing it all.

I have a mandolin but use it less and less. For bulk slicing I use a food processor. A mandolin has 3 pieces (backboard, slicing board that is removable and interchangeable for ones with "teeth" on, and a veg holder. You also need a bowl or plate. A FP has a bowl, blade, lid, and plunger, so, same number of pieces to wash. Buy a FP. Mrs Pots' arthritis won't get better, and may get worse, in which case she will struggle with a mandolin, so buy for the future.

I used to have a mandolin but it was scary then luckily I found a Slicer Shredder attachment for my Kenwood chef so I use that instead.

I looked at all the reveiws for various slicing things including that one BB said.......basically they all say they're rubbish and don't stay the distance especially with hard stuff like carrots. Don't waste your money just get a processor, buy for the future and it's not that much more washing up. If you have a dishwasher the bits are usually dishwasher safe anyhoo.......

Like Jules, my Hubby is also a trained Chef. Personally, I wouldn't let him within a hundred miles of a ruddy Mandolin - he bleeds in the food enough as it is!

We don't have a food processor, but that is for two reasons; a: We don't have room to store one, and b: We don't have room for our dishwasher, so I have to wash up by hand. I HAAAAAAAATE washing up!

As soon as we have room, we WILL have a dishwasher, and we WILL have a food processor - a ruddy big industrial one! We will NEVER have a mandoline!

I think I am getting the message here.

              Looks like a rethink.

Potty - I just thought of you
If ever you find one of these on sale - probably in a charity shop or maybe on Ebay - snap it up. Its a Moulinex Mouli-Julienne and it slices, grates, shreds........does all sorts of things at the turn of a handle - and no risk to fingers. I've just grated 3 courgettes in minutes. It fold flat, into a box the size of a shoe box, and is no effort to set up or wash.

They're excellent - if you have a good firm grip......

My mother had one, years ago. I have a normal mouli legumes which is fairly hard work with some veg. I ought to get rid of it - the stick blender has replaced it in my kitchen. It was excellent for baby food many years ago.

I've had one of these for a few years now andit's great. I added an attachment for doing little cubes of veggies as well for mecedoine. It's been very hard-working and doesn't take up much room.
