I came across this clue today:

"He and I were hungry in Russia"

    6 letters, ending with 'T'

    What do you think?

I know the answer and it amused me no end (it doesn't take much, honest!)

The clue "gegs (9, 4)" certainly pre-dates Drop the Dead Donkey. I remember being told of it in the mid 70s by a work colleague who did The Times crossword every day.

I just had a rummage on the interwebs, but if the origin of the clue is there I couldn't find it.
