My son is getting married in October and I am thinking that I ought to loose a bit of weight to look my best and knock 'em dead in my new dress. Anyone have any experience of this new 5:2 diet where you eat normally for 5 day and starve for 2?

Our friends are doing it, and have lost half a stone each on it. We have to listen to boring "I'm on a fast day" type conversations though
Any diet will work in the short term. It's keeping the weight off that's the hard bit. You might like to read through, or bump, this:

Don't I know it, keeping the weight off has been the bane of my life for over forty years! Have had a look at the 'diet' thread, may have to set aside a couple of hours to read in detail. Thanks for the help . Mybest friend gave me a mug with 'the hardest part of a diet is shutting up about it!' written on it. I think she was trying to tell me something

I tried the 5:2 diet - it does work but it's hard to do it when I am not at work! School hols at the moment and discipline goes out of the window. Mondays and Thursdays were my 'hungry' days and the rest of the time I was (relatively) sensible. Lost half a stone and have not put it back on, but I still need to lost half a stone. It may have to wait until September.

Thanks for the info guys. I just despair at how much more difficult it is to loose weight now I am nearly 60. Used to reularly be abe to ditch a pound or two a week in my 20s and 30s. Now looking at a calculator on how many calories I need a day in order to loose just one pound a week , it turns out to be just 1018 cals. Most diets in the mags and books talk about 1500 ! I would be putting it on not loosig it! Maybe sensible eating and then this 5:2, if I find the will power from somewhere. Think of me when you are eating cake.

I'd put your attention to 'do more' rather than 'eat less'.
It's a much more positive frame of mind to be out and about working up a bit of a sweat, than sitting and brooding on all the *nice* thinks that you are being deprived of - and you improve your health and fitness at the same time as dropping a pound or two.
Win win!

Been there bought the t shirt. A sedentary job and arthritic knee restrict me jogging any more. Garden on my days off. Always conscious of keeping moving. We all have to try to fit these things in with our life style, but in the end it always boils down to willpower and like everyone else I take responsibility for my own body.
That's life, isn't it , no use wasting it with pining for what can't be.
Gosh we're getting very philosophical arent we, but thanks for the good advice.

Well, I don't know if this will be any help to you.....
my son got married on July the 13th - proud Mum bursting at the seams in more ways than one.
It was a very hot day. I decided to wear linen trousers and jacket with a vest type top under. Normally, I never show my little fat arms but....... I decided, with the help and encouragement of my daughter, that there are many people with fatter arms than me and it's important to be cool and comfortable so arms were on show!
There are situations in life that you can spoil by being hung up on mere details. Just start looking for a dress that flatters you now and don't worry about the rest.

Thanks Patchninja - good psychological advice.
In fact I already have the outfit. The dress rocks! I look 'hot' for the first time in 25 years, I am so pleased with it (and that's without losing weight) just thought I ought to make a bit of an effort.
