Slow loading pages, headaches with flashing adverts... am I the only one?
The ads are annoying and make me want to log out rather than buy anything. Also the spaces between the posts are full of ads. I like GYO and the forum, but if I found a forum that didn't have so many ads I would go there. I understand that companies have to make money, but we are in hard times and I'd rather spend sometime enjoying the posts on here, and for a short time at least forget about the crass capitalist/corporate society that is picking my bones clean at every opportunity. Grow your own? Yet spend your money on things you don’t need, but constantly bombard you in the adverts. Oops that’s the Permaculturist coming out in me. I am a subscriber, but the flashing adverts are making me think again. I used to run a large professional website so I know how much money can be made from advertising.

Adblock Plus, which Two_Sheds has put a link to up there ^ is the best solution to all of these problems. If installing it is doing weird things to your computer, then you've installed the wrong one. I use it with Chrome browser and see very few adverts on here, or on Facebook which used to be appalling before I installed it.
I still get the horrible roll-down/roll-up subscription thingy on here, but I just open the page and wait a few seconds for it to do its thing before I try to scroll down the page.
Incidentally, just wondering why this is posted on the Vegging Out board? I can't move it to Chit-chat where it'd be more appropriate because Nicos has posted a link to it for Admin :\
Not only on here, but in the magazine. Unless it's entirely coincidental, I've seen advice & techniques discussed on here written up as an article in the mag. So the mag is getting free copy too

Sorry, that would be my fault ... I did't really think about where I was posting it to be honest, I just stuck it in the place I use most often. Mind you, I bet I got more responses to it in here than in the Chit Chat area (which I don't think I've ever visited to be honest!) .

I may have the 'wrong one', but unfortunately in order to install the 'right' one I'd need to download Chrome, as well as Ad Blocker, and it would probably use up most of my generous 3gb per month allowance! A further 1mb costs me 15 euros, so a bit of an expensive way around something that really shouldn't be a problem in the first place...
Zazen999 how many posts would I have made if I wasn't put off by the stupid flashing adverts? Check my times on this forum, short amounts of time, then I log off and look for the required answers before logging off again.
I think I'll try somewhere else, without the flashy adverts and intrusive cookies.
Thanks.
Hey farmer farmer put away the D.D.T. Now give me spots on my apples but leave me the birds and the bees please!

It was a little gentle ribbing - hence the wink at the end - no need to flounce out!
https://www.adblockplus.org Also works with Firefox, Opera and Android. The Internet Explorer version will be available soon.
OK thx Sarah... I downloaded and installed an Explorer version, and that's what's been causing the problems. Must be a new version due out I guess. I'd still respectfully suggest that the mag should reconsider its policy on moving ads though - apart from anything else, there are quite possibly H&S issues with frequent screen movements? I know some people with epilepsy for example find certain types of flickering can trigger an attack.. (We even had to re-paint walls where I worked because a particular shade of vomit yellow had the same effect!).
And of course, the more 'gadgets' and 'add-ons' we have to install on our home PCs or laptops, the more problems we're likely to face as they start to conflict with each other.. this is why I've just had mine completely reinstalled, because I had so much junk on it that it could barely function.

I stopped using Explorer a couple of years ago, after advice from the lovely Grapes above, because it was causing me problems.
Chrome is brilliant, very smooth.

I know next-to-nothing about computers, and you surely know more than me. Kathy, do you do regular housekeeping on your computer? clearing out temporary Internet files, cookies, history, and cache, etc.
I don't know what I'm doing, which is why I use C-cleaner every few weeks. I also have started keeping my photos on a memory stick (because they were using up so much memory).
My lapdog runs really well, much better than my OH's laptops. I don't visit certain sites that Mr Cameron makes you specifically request: I don't know what difference that makes, but OH once had 18 trojans on his lappy the last time he let me clean it up
All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
Thanks Two-Sheds for the C cleaner link. It's working away as I type. I use Chrome and only get that horrible sliding one that makes me feel queazy too!
