As a possibility of looking at them from a different angle, on BBC4 tonight, 11-Aug, at 19:00 is a program called The Wonder of Weeds.

Who knows, they may not be the evil soul destroying things we think they are. They might have a nice, warm, kind, welcoming side to their personality. (OK doubtful

I don't have a problem with weeds, really...apart from when they try to pull down the stuff I've grown.

Bindweed is a relative of the sweet potato after all.

And they make a great mulch; and compost.

See the Gro website for 31 day compost made from cardboard, and old weeds mainly dock. It's fantastic!

Certainly soft, annual weeds make a good addition to compost, also to any rainwater holders you have (I leave them stand in the water like nettles, borage, etc.). Mind you, I only have small buckets for rainwater, kept mostly covered and placed behind a fenced area so no small children can get at them.

Also, any bed overrun with weeds can benefit with being covered overwinter, allowing the weeds to thoroughly rot down and improve the bed while they're at it.

I'd like to see that programme but we don't have BBC4 - maybe they'll repeat it on one of the other BBCs. I'd love if others would let us have their opinions of it.

I don't differentiate between weeds and plants - many of them are beautiful, edible, practical and available at no cost
What can be more beautiful than a dandelion flower? If one of the plant companies sold a flower like that it would cost a bomb - better not give them any ideas though

i just can't imagine roast beef, yorkie puds and dandelion flowers .... just doesn't do it for me ... i'd rather have my french beans and potatoes ...

My weeds are all put to use, even if it's just to make compost.

My current Worst Weed is a creeping runnering grass that behaves like couch grass but is a lot thinner. It's all through the school flower beds and is impossible to pull out, it just snaps off

And I've finally found out what it's called: Agrostis stolonifera
