Most of you have probably forgotten I exist as I have been away for ages. Things have been very hectic getting ready to start my new teaching job in abu dhabi. I fly out on Friday to start work on Sunday, although I would think the first few days will be taken up with admin. I finished my council job last Friday, and helped my daughter move into her new flat over the weekend. Today, major breakthrough, emptied the freezer of last year's produce, gave it all to a friend as son no2 wasn't going to use it. Strange how small things seem so important!

Getting sorted
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
Now a little Shrinking Violet.

Oh barley Sugar, I wish you the very best of luck in your'e new job.
Hope you will keep us all updated on your'e new life.
Best wishes.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Good luck in Abu Dhabi! I lived in Dubai for 3 years, the culture can take a little getting used to.
Especially the driving, I highly recommend getting a 4x4. Not only is it a bit safer on the roads (I've seen some nasty accidents involving small cars... seen some nasty 4x4 accidents too, but on the whole they tend to come away better) but off-roading is really fun. My brother was into some pretty hardcore dune-bashing so we did a lot of that, but even just going a little way into the desert and having a barbecue and camping is fun too.
You can grow *some* things, but in the summer it's going to be way too hot for most fruit/veg. My brother built a pergola with shade cloth, got quite a few things growing - chillies, tomatoes, potatoes, figs...
Anyway, good luck, and enjoy it!
