  • Walking in the dark!

Last night we did the 7km round trip for a beer at the nearest bar which meant walking back in the dark.
The road goes through thick forest the whole way and is very dark. The only light was from the moon. We heard lots of deer moving away, plus one bigger noisy thing that crashed around and grunted - boar? Or a lost tourist!
We heard five owls and lots of bats, saw three glow worms (plus two more in the garden) and were only passed by three cars (one of which nearly hit us despite light clothing and high viz!).
Coming out of the woods on the valley floor we could see two churches and a castle on the hill tops all lit up. It was beautuful.

    Anyway. Just thought I'd share

Oh, and the beer wasn't up to much!

Yeah, I'm astounded by how many people drive in the gutter, even when the road is empty

Advanced driving has you driving nearer the centre of the road than the gutter, where you can see more of the road and avoid hazards at the edge like pedestrians, cyclists and wildlife

Many years ago my brother and I used to visit the pub in the village two miles away from home for darts night and friendly conversation every Monday.

No street lighting whatsoever (little villages on the edge of Dartmoor) and it was amazing the things you saw and heard on the way.

It sounds wonderful PP, even if the beer was not so good

It sounds well worth the long walk, PP, even for bad beer. Didn't they serve anything else?

Just walked back from a friend's house.

Half moon glowing, cows glowing in the 'light'...and we saw one single glow worm in the grass verge...and thought of you PP!

I am on nights this week and hate it with a passion, the only good point is that I get to see the wildlife that you miss when you are in bed! Sat for 20 mins the othernight watching a barn owl, encountered a family of foxes and nearly crashed the car when a badger sauntered across the road in front of me! There is nothing like falling asleep with the symphony of the dawn chorus.

I really, really want to spend a night on the allotment, to see all the beasties out and about, but am always asleep by 9
