Is it easy to confuse anything else with rowan? I've seen zillions of berries like this but not really thought about them .... just wanna make sure they are rowan before i go picking!

The thing to do is to make sure the twigs have the classic ash configuration of the "three toes" at the end. This is actually ash https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&rc...77359141675245 as the mountain ash pictures weren't as clear. If it's got leaves and berries on nothing else in the wild really looks like it."A life lived in fear is a life half lived."

cool ..... turns out i've got one in the garden .... it was a rotten old tree that i cut down about 20 years ago, but i didn't kill it off properly .... kept getting sticks and twigs growing up .... i kept cutting them back to ground level .... i didn't bother last year and now i have about a few sticks, maybe 7ft tall, with leaves and berries .... bonus! i'll let it grow now ....
there's a big one round the corner with orange berries, another that looks the same but with red berries .... can rowan berries be red??

The seed structure of the juniper berries is fairly distinctive so you can cross check."A life lived in fear is a life half lived."

Here are some other plants with red berries to be aware of ............. http://www.countrylovers.co.uk/wfs/wfsberries.
I know Rowan so well that I don't even have to think about what it is anymore - but if you're not sure, post a photo of the leaves and berries on here and we'll help you decide.
